Tehran, Aug 30 (UNB) – Bangladesh and Iran on Thursday emphasised making the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) more effective through a coordinated approach by its all member states.

The two countries came up with the view when Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina met Iranian President Dr Mahmoud Ahmadinejad at the OIC Convention Centre on the sidelines of the 16th NAM Summit that began here earlier in the day.

After the meeting, PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad briefed reporters.

During the meeting, both the leaders discussed issues relating to bilateral interests.

Sheikh Hasina apprised the Iranian President that Bangladesh maintains its macroeconomic stability despite the global economic recession. “Bangladesh’s economy is doing well despite the global economic meltdown,” she added.

Earlier, the Prime Minister met Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the same venue.

During the meeting, Hasina underscored the need for direct air and shipping links with Sri Lanka to promote trade and business between the two countries. “We need an early conclusion of agreement for promotion and protection of investment now under consideration of both sides for increasing investment opportunities,” she said.

The Prime Minister hoped that the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on training of nurses in Colombo and trainers from Sri Lanka to train nurses in Bangladesh would conclude soon.

“I hope the MoU signed during the visit of Sri Lanka’s president to Bangladesh on cooperation on fisheries and agriculture will come into effect soon,”

Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni, Ambassador at-Large M Ziauddin, Foreign Secretary Mohammad Mijarul Quayes and PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad were present on both occasions. Bangladesh Ambassador to Iran Khandakar Abdus Sattar was present during the PM's meeting with the Iranian President.

Later, Sheikh Hasina along with other heads of state and government attending the NAM Summit joined the dinner hosted by the Iranian President at Permanent Exhibition Centre in Tehran.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, now in Tehran to attend 16th Nam Summit, on Friday called on Supreme Leader of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ayatollah Ali Hosseini Khamenei.

Ayatollah Khameni welcomed the Bangladesh premier and her delegation and thanked her for participating in the Nam Summit.

He highlighted the historical, cultural and religious links between the two brotherly countries and appreciated the role of Bangladesh in different international bodies such as UN, Nam, OIC and D-8.

He then emphasised that both the countries can work together in different international forums for common benefit. He hoped that as new Chair of Nam, Iran would be able to play an effective role for strengthening the solidarity among member states. He sought Bangladesh's support in this regard.

The Iranian Supreme Leader also underscored the need for further expansion of bilateral relations between the two countries, particularly in the field of trade, commerce and investment.

Thanking the Iranian leader, the prime minister appreciated his inspiring speech at the inaugural session of the 16th Nam Summit.

She assured him of Bangladesh's full support to the Islamic Republic of Iran during the chairmanship of Nam over the next three years.

She also underscored the need for unity among the Muslim Ummah and hoped that OIC would take initiatives to solve problems within the Ummah through consultations among the Muslim nations.

The prime minister recalled that in this month of August, Bangladesh's Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated.

Ayatollah Khameni particularly offered his prayers for the eternal peace of Bangabandhu's departed soul.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was accompanied by Foreign Minister Dipu Moni, Ambassador at Large M Ziauddin, Foreign Secretary Mijarul Quayes and Bangladesh Ambassador to Iran Khondker Abdus Sattar.

The prime minister on Thursday met the Iranian president and current Chair of Nam, Mahmoud Ahmedinejad, on the sidelines of the Summit.

Agreed...even Zardari has managed to go medium way for the first time (thanks God for understanding multilater ties are important for a war-torn country)...Iran is an oil riched country. Our countires (3rd world countries with so many problems like poverty) can't afford political games of the rich countries...so better to go medium as possible...

I was amazed at Indian PM, he kept silence over a strong ally Israel...
Indian PM seems a good man like Zardari (apart from corruption, my personal opinion, However Allah knows the best)

I do strongly agree...BD has already avoided to be isolated, whilst not visiting Pakistan for cricket reasons...she should have done the same now...

if it is a dead organisation then by using word unfortunately would make a 'khula tzaad' (contradiction)...

Iran has used its platform to show the world that its not isolated and it has proved (India's presence, an emerging power has proved it)...

India has got the headline by sacrificing its alliance with Israel...Iran has got India by sacrificing its recently-developed-warm alliance a bit with PAkistan...But, Pakistan has said thankfully that it believes NOW in multilateral relation...Hasina has to learn that Iran has been mostly neutral on Kashmir case, but when USA was hitting IRAN then Pakistan extended its hand...India is diverting to Iran for kashmir cause...everyone is seeking its interest...but Pakistan did supported IRAN without any interest but for 'ummah'r reason...so pakistan should keep supporting Ummah but first making itself strong enough and get rid of this OTHERS war in its own country....

In this scenario BD would be a sacrificing goat, like Pakistan has been always (like hosting million of Afghan hosting to it soil and then is trapped in it that it's difficult for it to tackle the internal problems)...I can not understand how our brother Iran has not hosted half of our common Afghan brothers then? As being muslim countries it was our shared responsibility...Even IRan has more as it has more resources than Pakistan...We believe in muslim brotherhood, Alhamdollilah...

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called for a rapid boost in bilateral relations between Tehran and Dhaka, and blamed the enemies' conspiracies for low level ties between the two countries.

"The distance created today between Iran and Bangladesh is the result of the malignancies of the aliens," Ahmadinejad said in a meeting with Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on the sidelines of the first day of the 16th heads-of-state summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in Tehran on Thursday.

"The officials of the two countries should further expand the bilateral relations in different fields, relying on the two nations' abundant cultural and historical commonalities, and specially considering that there is no limitation and obstacle to the development of the two countries' relations," he added.

The second day of the 16th heads-of-state summit of the NAM started work here in Tehran on Friday morning under the leadership of President Ahmadinejad.

Different leaders and presidents of the NAM members are due to address the participants in the second day of the summit.

A number of 63 leaders of the NAM states had registered for addressing the summit. On the first day, 20 heads-of-state delivered speeches, while over 40 are still waiting to convey their opinions to their counterparts in the largest international grouping after the UN.

The closing ceremony of the NAM summit will be held after the leaders' speeches. The summit meeting is due to issue a final statement at the closing ceremony, which reportedly has over 680 paragraphs on various topics, including opposition to aliens' interference in Syria's internal affairs, opposition to the unilateral sanctions against countries and also supporting countries' independence.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Iran and Bangladesh signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate Tehran's developmental aids to Dhaka.


The MoU was signed on Friday by Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araqchi and Foreign Secretary of Bangladesh Mohamed Mijarul Quayes in Tehran on the sidelines of the 16th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) summit.

Leaders and presidents of the NAM member states ended the morning session of the second day of their summit in Tehran on Friday and are now in their afternoon session to ratify the final statement of the summit

The inauguration ceremony of the 16th NAM Summit on Thursday ended after speeches by Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei, Egyptian President Mohammad Mursi and Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the previous and current presidents of the NAM, as well as UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, President of the UN General Assembly Nasser Abdulaziz and Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh.

The Egyptian president delivered the NAM's presidency to Iran after addressing the audience in the inauguration ceremony of the NAM summit in Tehran Thursday.

The United States and Israel are among the nations fearful that the summit drawing a reported 50 or more heads of state and government will give Tehran a boost in legitimacy and rally disgruntled states to its defense of its nuclear programs.

The Islamic Republic's three-year tenure as head of the NAM is a chance for Tehran to elevate its international standing as the United States seeks to cripple its economy and isolate it diplomatically over its disputed nuclear program.

Many analysts say that the diplomatic spotlight will give Tehran an opportunity to show Washington has failed to cut it off from the rest of the world.
