Dhaka, May 23 (bdnews24.com) – The Bangladesh and Indian government are jointly organising a two-day programme to celebrate the 113th birth anniversary of Kazi Nazrul Islam and the 90th anniversary of the publication of his poem 'Bidrohi'.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is expected to inaugurate the programme at 10am on Friday at the Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in Dhaka, the Information and Cultural Affairs Minister Abul Kalam Azad said at a press briefing on Wednesday at the Secretariat.

The minister said Indian Minister of Law and Justice Salman Khurshid will represent his country at the programme. Two Indian MPs and a group of singers and recitation artists will also attend the programme.

The two-day celebration will also include cultural programmes and exhibition of Bangladesh's national poet's books. These segments will be organised at the Shilpakala Academy.

Apart from these, various programmes will also be organised at Comilla, Mymensingh's Trishal, Chittagong and Khulna.

Kazi Nazrul Islam was born on May 24, 1899 in Churulia village in the Indian state of West Bengal. He spent most of his life in Kolkata. The Bangladeshi government invited Nazrul and his family to Dhaka in 1972 and officially recognised him as the country's national poet.

Nazrul's poem 'Bidrohi' was published in 1922 which was an inspiration to the Bangalees during the anti-British movements. He later came to be known as 'Bidrohi Kobi' (Rebel Poet).

He died on Aug 29, 1976 at the age of 77.
