Bangladesh has achieved the fastest growth in the Asia-Pacific economies comprised of 45 countries, according to the Asian Development Bank (ADB).

In the outgoing fiscal year of 2018-19, the AD said, the country attained 7.9 per cent growth which was fastest expansion since 1974.

The bank predicted that the growth will be 8.0 per cent in the FY2019 and FY2020, terming it a new record.

“Bangladesh will continue to be the fastest in the Asia-Pacific,” the bank said in its Asian Development Outlook (ADO).

ADB Country Director for its Bangladesh resident mission Manmohan Parkash handed over the ADO to Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her Sangsad Bhaban office.

The ADO, the annual publication of the ADB, evaluates and forecasts economic performance of the 45 Asian and Pacific countries.

It said the growth will be moderate across most of developing Asia -- 5.7 per cent in 2019 and 5.6 per cent in 2020 from 6.2 per cent in 2017 and 5.9 per cent in 2018.

South Asia will see buck trend of slowing growth in Asia-- 6.8 per cent in 2019 and 6.9 per cent in 2020.

The ADO said the key attributors of this growth are strong leadership, good governance, stable government and continued political calm, sound macroeconomic policy and right development priorities.

The drivers of the growth have been identified as higher public investment, stronger consumption demand, revival in exports, improved power supply and higher growth in private sector credit.

The ADO pointed out that Bangladesh has favourable trade prospects despite a weaker global growth while exports and remittances are likely to increase further.

It also mentioned that strong public investment due to continued policy environment and expeditious implementation of large infrastructure projects and higher tax collection with expanded tax base will move Bangladesh economy further.

It said Bangladesh’s banking system reforms will attract higher private investment which will support the growth.

Sheikh Hasina said the government is gradually advancing the economy in a well-planned manner. “We’ve done our analysis before formulating the budget this year also,” she said.

Briefing reporters, PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim said, the Prime Minister mentioned that when Awami league was in the opposition, her party had also taken various types of economic programmes for the sake of the country.

“Our Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman had a vision for developing the country in totality and reducing the gap between the rich and poor and urban and rural areas. We’re working towards that direction,” the Prime Minister said.

She said the government is setting up 100 economic zones in the country where investors from across the globe can set up their industries.

Manmohan Parkash highly appreciated the government’s economic plan under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, saying all of its development programmes are people-centric.

Principal Secretary M Nojibur Rahman and Finance Secretary Abdur Rouf Talukder were present at the meeting, reprots UNB.

Bangladesh used to grow 6.0-6.5 percent for many years until a few years ago. Mega infrastructure projects and govt's increasing public works in recent years has added another 1.0-1.5 percent growth with it. I do not know why some people are forgetting these and having problem to accept what ADB, IMF and World Bank is saying. Growth rate of 7.5-8.0 percent is noway impossible for Bangladesh when a lot of foreign money is being injected in our economy.

I think some Bangladeshi people are not mentally prepared that Bangladesh could grow rapidly. It do not suit well with their mental image of Bangladesh being a poor and hopeless country. Even if I do not believe what Bangladesh govt. says, why should I disbelieve what these global institutions are saying ? Then whom should I believe?

I visited my family this weekend in NY.

I spoke to my aunts who are not really formally educated.

But even they have noticed a distinct change in Bangladesh.

What they were describing to me they couldn't put into words but I sense they were talking about a sort of atmosphere of entrepreneurial spirit and optimism in Bangladesh.

At least from their words, I sensed real progress or impending progress in real terms.

People seem to have food, they have phones, and they have ideas.

Yep, ease of doing business, FDI, SEZs and infrastructure will all play their part in sustaining 8%+ growth till 2030 at least.

BD has achieved economic take-off.

We need to fix the banking sector and bring more people into the tax net in the next phase to continue progression.

I am all for FDI but feel indigenous growth drivers are where BD needs to pay attention and cultivate.

Generate more power, create more transport and communications opportunities and watch the nation bloom. We have what many nation do not .... an enterprising and resilient people.

Changes are significant. I am visiting BD after almost 10 years since 2009. Other then Dhaka airport lot of improvements. My short stay here from personal experience i can tell people seems more well off. There are lot of entrepreneurship and postie vibe among new generation. When i was kid in mid 90's we used to have ac in every room and back then it was big thing (for a third world country it was) but now i see almost every relatives i visited have AC and modern appliances (Again this is from personal experience don't know whole picture and our house in good area i guess). Our village called kamrangirchar (I think its part of dhaka city now) close to Dhaka and it used to be just a village. I visited the area after almost 20 years and this time and i am shocked to see the whole area went on construction boom so many small factories and five six story buildings every where. People are busy and keep growing. Although i am disappointed to see they killed the river and there are rampant pollution. Can BD keep it up? i dont know for now we have to wait...but for the first time i am hopeful about BD's future. Our people know how to struggle and sooner or later this will pay off.

Dude 200 years ago BD may have been the richest region on the planet. Without UK and Pakistan holding us back we can achieve anything.
