Dhaka, Bangladesh (CNN) -- The eldest son of a former prime minister is one of 18 people named in an arrest warrant in connection with the August 21, 2004, grenade attacks -- aimed at now-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina -- that killed 24 people .

Public Prosecutor Abu Abdullah said the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Court issued the warrant hours after the Criminal Investigation Department filed a supplementary charge sheet accusing 30 influential people -- including a former home minister, former chiefs of two state intelligence services and a former inspector general of the Bangladesh Police -- in connection with the case.

Tarique Rahman, 46, whose mother is former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, now resides in England.

Ivy Rahman, the wife of Bangladesh President Zillur Rahman, was among the two dozen who died in the attacks at a rally for Hasina. Scores of people were wounded, including Hasina, who suffered minor injuries.

The attacks are believed to have been carried out by Harkat-ul Jihad al Islami, an outlawed Islamist group.

Abdullah Abu said Tarique Rahman aided and abetted the Zia administration in planning the attack it and helping the suspects flee the scene.

Since the end of Zia's tenure in 2006, Tarique is facing 14 cases on charges of corruption and extortion.

Zia's youngest son, Arafat Rahman, now in Thailand, has been recently jailed for six years on a corruption and money laundering charge.

Zia, who heads the opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and has served twice as the country's prime minister, said political vendettas are to blame in both her sons' prosecutions.

The BNP and its allies, soundly defeated by Hasina's Awami League in the 2008 general elections, have recently demanded midterm elections and launched an anti-government movement.

The grenade attack case took a new turn in 2008 when police arrested a former state minister for education in Zia's cabinet, Abdus Salam Pintu, on a charge of abetting and aiding militants to carry out the attack.

Both Pintu and Lutfozzaman Babar, state minister for home affairs in Zia's cabinet, are now in jail.

In an earlier charge sheet, Pintu and 21 other people, including top members of Harkat-ul Jihad al Islami, were accused in connection with the attacks.

To BD nationals,
How bad is the situation regarding Harkat-ul Jihad? or is the western media just hyping it too much?

.
Not much to do with Western media.

This is purely political. Even though Tarique is a very vile and corrupt man, he is not the 'assassin' sort of person.

This trail is politically motivated. The courts in Bangladesh are controlled by the government in case anyone didn't know. This is just done weaken the BNP and basically weaken any opposition the AL would face. Koko (Khaleda's other son) was also recently charged with corruption.

Hasina is basically picking a fight with every Tom, Dick and Harry out there within Bangladesh.

P.S: Please, delete that image. The image of her makes my blood boil

hope it doesn't get out a hand...we already kno the consequences. Support such elements now and the future will be surely grim.

Awesome. Hasina is going to fry Kahaleda's kids, and Khaleda will return same when she gets back to power. No more political dynasties :enjoy:.

Hahahahaha:D
Why didn't I think of that! I wish I could sort of help 'em out!

From the manner the posters are at it, it appears that there is no national agenda on either side of the divide. The only agenda, it appears, is to keep either of the Bengums supreme.

If all Bangladeshis know that the courts are politically controlled, then would it really matter whether a case is registered against this man or if he is jailed?

Therefore, would it be correct to believe that it will not help AL at all because all Bangladeshis know it is one big circus and nothing more?
