Bangladesh bans travelers’ from India, Europe expect UK

DHAKA, March 14, 2020 (BSS) – Dhaka today imposed a ban on traveler’s from all European countries excepting the UK and the countries, which have already restricted their borders, for next couple of weeks from tomorrow midnight to prevent the outbreak of deadly novel coronavirus.

“As per Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s directives, we have decided to impose the ban on travelers’ till March 31,” Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen told newsmen at a crowded media briefing at the State Guest House Padma here tonight.

He said as the World Health Organization has declared the Europe as the new epicenter of the coronavirus (COVID-19), the government has taken the decision to protect its citizens from the outbreak.

The ban also will be effective for those countries which have already restricted borders that include India, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar.

Bangladesh on Saturday imposed ban on all travellers’ entry to the country from European countries except England and from others affected by novel coronavirus for two weeks as two more Bangladeshis were identified with COVID-19.

It also suspended visa-on-arrival facilities for all countries for two weeks.

‘All travellers from all European countries except England will remain suspended for two weeks with effect from 12:01am Monday,’ said foreign minister AK Abdul Momen.

Speaking at a press conference at state guesthouse Padma, the minister said the government would observe the global situation on coronavirus for two weeks to take further decision.

The restrictions came two days after the World Health Organisation characterised the coronavirus situation a global pandemic.

Momen also said that the government had also decided to suspend flights to and from the countries which already imposed ban on travellers from Bangladesh including India, Nepal, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and Qatar.

At the press conference, health minister Zahid Maleque said two more Bangladeshis, one from Italy and another from Germany, were identified with the COVID-19 disease while in quarantine.

They were taken to hospital, he said.

I know there is a large BD diaspora in the UK but the country is perhaps one of the worse COVID-19 hit territories in Europe (or near Europe ... if you know what I mean). It should have been on the travel ban. Even the US has imposed ban.

The situation in uk at this moment is not remotely comparable to any of the major countries in mainland europe.
This may change but UK is completely calm and normal except for idiots buying toilet papers in bulk so shops are having difficulties keeping up supplies!!!

UK has one of the highest growth in new cases. 342 new cases in just the last day. Bangladesh should have banned UK travellers. Developed countries can't handle it, what would happened when Bangladeshis start to get infected? Better to just ban regular travels from all countries.

I think it might be because they think there may be a lockdown and so they will be unable to leave the house for some time and toilet paper is essential item.

Yes but the good thing about the UK is that the cases are evenly spread out rather than clustered around certain regions like in China and Italy. This makes the chances of getting infected from anyone random in the UK much less than someone from the mostly affected areas in China and Italy.
Still BD government needs to ban all travel to and from UK now to keep BD safe.

This is a good suggestion. Not happening however unless UK govt. itself locks down their whole country, then Bangladesh will have to reciprocate anyway.
