already we are facing lack of literacy rate and youtube is one of the free and best way for getting IT and other education so govt should avoid taking such steps when they are unable to provide alternative good education, learning and earning source for poor public, these judges and establishment only think about their own self and status but have no regard of importance of such platform for common public

Thank God we have at least one sensible person in the government.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday took notice of "objectionable content" being shared on YouTube and other social media platforms, and issued notices to the Foreign Office and the Attorney General in this regard.

A three-member bench, comprising Justice Mushir Alam, Justice Qazi Muhammad Amin Ahmed and Justice Aminud Din Khan, took notice during a hearing on a bail petition of a man accused of a sectarian crime.

During the hearing, Justice Amin remarked that the public had a right to comment on the judiciary's performance and judgements but social media "did not even spare their families and shamed the judges".

"They become 'uncles' on social media and incite people against the Pakistan Army, judiciary and government," he said, adding that the judiciary "has no objection to the right to freedom of speech".

"Our salaries come from the public's money, [but] the Constitution gives us the right to our private lives."

Justice Amin said that the top court had announced a judgement on a case a day earlier which was then discussed on YouTube. "We are showing patience [but] this has to come to an end."

Justice Amin questioned whether the Federal Investigation Agency and the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) had seen what was happening on YouTube. "There are several countries where YouTube is banned. Try uploading content against America and the European Union," he said.

Justice Alam observed that "many countries control social media through local laws".

PTA authorities, present in court, replied that they could not remove "individual content but could only report it".

Following notices to the AG and Foreign office, the hearing was adjourned for an indefinite period.

The top court last week took suo motu notice of an alleged contemptuous tweet by journalist Mateeullah Jan. A Supreme Court bench, comprising Chief Justice Gulzar Ahmed, Justice Alam and Justice Ijazul Ahsan, had issued notices to the attorney general, Jan and president of the Supreme Court of Bar Association. During today's hearing, Jan was given more time to submit his reply.

Earlier this month, the Supreme Court formally charged Rawalpindi-based cleric Mirza Iftikharuddin with contempt of court by delivering a derogatory and scandalous speech against the judiciary which went viral on social media.

The court indicted the cleric under Section 5 of the Contempt of the Court Ordinance 2003 after rejecting his unconditional apology he tendered for making an objectionable speech in a private meeting in which he had hurled abusive language at Justice Qazi Faez Isa of the Supreme Court as well as the institution of judiciary

Pakistani government had asked these social media firms to register themselves in Pakistan so content can be filtered as per Pakistani authorities content management protocols.

Recently there have been a surge in domestic abuse and honor killing due to social media along with elements of exploitation and blackmail.

These same lot of judges have no problem with blasphemy cases. They are always giving relief to blasphemers but when it comes to the izzat of their own families then they are not ready to spare anyone. Why these double standards?

Blasphemy law is UN-ISLAMIC deceitful and fraudulent in its formation.

These old people will take us back to stone age.
There are pros and cons, of course YouTube has also. On YouTube there is tonnes of knowledge and skills also and I myself learnt much. We should leave negativity and adopt positives.
For few culprits the judges should not convict the whole nation. They should go after the channels which caused their pains.
Neither judges are angels nor they should behave like. They are just there to protect the British Imperial law made for slaves.

Quite literally, these fossils don’t understand the value of these things. Remember when YouTube was banned and all we had in multimedia was a basic presence on Vimeo and daily motion.

Here are some quick points on the worth of YouTube alone:

  • Livelihoods of hundreds of not thousands of content creators are tied to YouTube. Tourism, gaming, cooking, political commentary, other social content.
  • The money earned off the platform brings in dollars which are desperately needed, I’m unaware the net effect minus ad revenue but it should be noted.
  • YouTube literally has diplomatic and strategic importance. It has helped us promote soft image and tourism in Pakistan. Just see the number of vlogs and travel guides today vs 2016 when YouTube was banned. Having a big YouTube presence also means we can have a say in international media narrative. If Pak YT is banned, all you’ll find in Pak related content is Indian material disparaging is. Coke studio alone is a massive projector of Pakistani culture and soft power.
  • Pakistan’s narrative in int’l affairs can only be promoted through our own content, we just saw the importance of media narrative on Feb27, imagine what the intl and public perception would have been had we have had a severely degraded social media. Twitter would be awash with Indian propaganda and YouTube void of our side of the story etc.
  • Students these days literally pass their degrees with the help of YouTube tutorials and online lessons. I know some CS students who claim >50% of their learning comes from YouTube videos.
  • Despite YouTube being used for questionable or immoral content, the information value alone we gain from it as Pakistanis is with any cost. Without YouTube, I can say definitely I would know less about my diverse country and it’s people.
Someone pls convey these arguments to these fools.

You've said everything I wanted to say and more! These people are buffoons of the highest order. YouTube is an immense platform we can use for education, training, entertainment and for economic activity. I'd rather have no judges and courts than no Youtube.

There is a simple technical fix for this. If you access Youtube in Pakistan, it can only be available via a browser plugin. If you have this plugin installed you can access YT, if you don't, you can't. There could be a mobile app for it too. Now in this app/plugin, there is a report to GoP button for content that is offensive by GoP retarded standards. This button reports urls to GoP who review them and if needs be, add them to a black list of URL's which cannot be accessed via the browser plugin/app.

Youtube itself says 13 yrs is the age limit. If idiots cant control their own children doesn't mean whole country of 220,000,000 has to suffer

I am not in favor of banning youtube, but honestly some members are overreacting , banning youtube will not send us back to stone age, its just one site there is a whole internet for learning and watching videos so relax .

Blasphemy law is UN-ISLAMIC deceitful and fraudulent in its formation.
This is your deceitful narrative. It is by every mean a very good deterrent against the blasphemers and also against those who want to misuse it!
