DHAKA, Aug 22 (BSS) - Bangladesh Air Force observed the 41st death anniversary of Shaheed Flight Lieutenant M Matiur Rahman, Bir Shreshtho, on Monday with due solemnity.

On the occasion mahfil-e-milad was arranged at the central
mosques at all BAF Bases after Eid-ul-Fitr prayer and special
munajat was offered seeking divine blessings for the departed
soul.

His noble sacrifice in the War of Liberation in 1971 was
recalled with high esteem at that time.

Assistant Chief of Air Staff (Admin) Air Vice Marshal
Masihuzzaman Serniabat visited the grave of Matiur Rahman at the
Martyred Intellectuals' Graveyard at Mirpur and offered munajat
for the salvation of the departed soul of Shaheed Flight
Lieutenant M Matiur Rahman.

Can't agree with your disrespectful comments. The 1971 war was imposed by the west to the unarmed civilian people of east. We fought to survive and some were killed in the process. Matiur Rahman was killed in a heroic effort to take his plane away from west Pakistan. He would have used it to liberate his country from the oppressors.

Note one thing. Our braves in the East Bengal Regiment fought valiantly and failed General Chowdhury's declared plan to take over Lahore in the 1965 war. But, you should agree that '71 was different. You were going to annihilate us had we not fought against you with whatever means we had.

Before and after 1965 west Pakistani troops in the east also fought valiantly in many border wars with India. There were wars called Qasbah war and Kasalong war etc. where they forced the Indian troops to dislodge. Thing is the perspective changed in 1971. It was a war of annihilation by one and liberation by the other.

Well if West Pakistan has prejudice against East Pakistan, then Matiur Rehman would not be serving as a instructor in PAF and MM Alam would not set a world record. Not unarmed civilians but armed proxies of Socialist India and Soviet Union murdering West Pakistanis in cold blood, and BD's as usual willing to sell themselves to cheap conspiracy theories.

A correction is required here, not his plane but a plane he hijacked forcefully. A solider which sticks to his pledge of loyalty is worth his salt, even if that oath is given to an enemy. Everything else is written down as a treason.

It would have been heroic if he actually managed to escape alive and contribute to the war.

Yes that's correct.His body was found quite far from the actual crash site where as Minhas was still in the plane at the time of impact.

Bir Sreshtho Matiur Rahman (মতিউর রহমা&#2472

Shaheed M. Matiur Rahman (February 21, 1945 in Dhaka - August 20, 1971) was a Flight Lieutenant in the Pakistan Air Force when the Liberation War broke out. His date of birth is sometimes mentioned as 29 November 1941.

For his attempt to defect from the Pakistan Air Force, he was decorated with the Bir Sreshtho award by Bangladesh which is the highest honor given. The Bangladesh Air Force's Air Base at Jessore is also named for him. This same base is home to the air force academy of Bangladesh.

He had received his primary education at Dhaka Collegiate School. Next he was admitted into PAF Public School, Sargodha in West Pakistan. After completing his twelfth class course there he entered Pakistan Air Force Academy. He was commissioned in June 1963 and was posted at Risalpur, West Pakistan. He successfully completed the Jet Conversion Course in Karachi before he was appointed a Jet Pilot in Peshawar.

On August 20, 1971 he attempted to steal a T-33 trainer from Karachi, Pakistan to India in order to defect from the Pakistan Air Force and join the liberation movement of Bangladesh. The T-33 aircraft was code-named 'Bluebird'. However, Matiur Rahman could not take the plane out of Pakistani territory, as reportedly, the other pilot Rashid Minhas in the plane forced it to crash. The plane crashed in Thatta, a place near the Indian border. His body, which was found near the crash site was reportedly buried at the graveyard of fourth class employees at Masroor Air Base, Pakistan.

After over 30 years of negotiations, his body was finally returned to Bangladesh for a ceremonial and highly symbolic reburial in 2006 (see below). His original burial in a nondescript grave in Pakistan had been a sore point between Bangladesh and Pakistan for decades.

Matiur's widow, Milly, and his two infant daughters were imprisoned for a month by Pakistan Air Force, and were released on September 29, 1971.

The remains of Flight Lieutenant Matiur Rahman were returned on June 24, 2006 from Pakistan to Bangladesh. He was buried at the Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard, in Mirpur, Dhaka, with full military honours.

The base of Bangladesh Air Force in Jessore has been named Matiur Rahman Air Base.

Those who are saying Bir Sreshtho Matiur Rahman a traitor they are showing the same hypocrisy like British had shown to many freedom seeking fighters of sub continent. The courage that he had shown by trying to take the plane out of Pakistan and join liberation movement leaving behind wife and 2 infant daughters is unique and should be praised by others. Very few people will do that and has such courage.
