BAE, HAL May Jointly Market Hawks Globally | AVIATION WEEK

BENGALURU, India — BAE Systems and Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) are exploring the possibility of marketing the Hawk Advanced Jet Trainer globally in the next couple of years.

Andrew Gallagher, BAE Systems India managing director and chief executive officer, told AVIATION WEEK that the aircraft has the potential to be marketed to more countries because of its brand value as a “very successful trainer.

“We are looking forward to beginning a global relationship with HAL, and Hawk aircraft is the beginning. We are in talks with HAL and will soon have the business and marketing plans in place,” Gallagher said. “We are keen to build a relationship with HAL around Hawk, as we need to take the platform to a more global market. The Hawk enables an air force or navy to provide frontline pilots for even the most modern fighter aircraft such as the Eurofighter Typhoon or Sukhoi Su-30.”

BAE Systems also will look to HAL to support more than 900 Hawks that are already operational globally. Asked about the spares issue that has delayed the manufacturing of Hawks under license at HAL, Gallagher said all the differences have been ironed out.

Concerning the Bangalore-based joint venture company BAE-HAL Software Ltd., Gallagher said the two companies are working more closely to boost the effort.

“The reality is that we haven’t found the right opportunity and we are looking to enhance the same,” he added. Though HAL claims it as a profit-making venture, it has yet to make an impact in the aerospace sector. Established in 1993, the joint venture provides information technology products and services to the aerospace, defense, transport and engineering industries.

BAE Systems says it is committed to the development of long-term, sustainable domestic business in India, not just in manufacturing but also in design, development, systems integration, testing and support.

“The company firmly supports India’s objective of procuring 70% of defense equipment domestically,” a BAE Systems official says.

“The further development of its longstanding relationship with HAL, and the establishment of Defense Land Systems India, are examples of the company’s determination to take active steps to demonstrate its support for India’s defense services.”

Despite being snubbed by the MoD for the shoddy handling of the media invitations ahead of the British PM David Cameron’s visit to HAL’s Bangalore Complex facility on July 28, HAL top brass shamelessly put up a dismal show during the event. With tension mounting in the media box following HAL’s flopped plan to invite only a few journalists for the event, HAL think-tank chose to keep a distance from the Media. Only junior employees and officers who were in-charge of getting the media inside were seen around. Some 'stars' were even seen ‘hiding’ behind aircraft wings and weapon bay doors. Though some journalists broke the barrier and exchanged pleasantries, it lacked the much-needed fell-good touch.
A middle-level grade PR officer was seen walking left, right and behind Nayak -- probably giving him inputs on media's mood. Known for his ability to be present in all photographs taken during official visits, this guy's shocking stories are now slowly coming out in the open through HAL's disgruntled football players.
With the morning snub by MoD officials from Delhi still fresh in their minds, following the blogger’s post on HAL’s nil-sighted media management (see earlier reports below), the journalists were left in the lurch with none forthcoming for an interaction. The event started an hour late and the media were made to wait (read stand) inside a designated area that resembled a boxing ring. There were many who were grounded (read as squatting) waiting for the PM to arrive.
Once the PM stepped in along with his team, the whole event was over within 10 minutes. In fact, it would be better to say: “Cameron came, saw and left.” Once the contracts for additional 57 Hawks were signed, Cameron left after briefly talking to HAL officials -– with initially showing their backs to the media -– until he was told that a front view would be ideal for shutterbugs.
And, now the breaking news! With Cameron leaving without uttering a word to the media who were inside the ‘boxing ring’, one hoped that there would be some briefing by HAL officials. Shockingly within minutes, HAL’s Nayak & Co disappeared. Thanks to the presence of mind exhibited by the media managers from Rolls-Royce and BAE Systems, the media got to know what the event was, considering all what we could see was three men signing on three different sets of papers and exchanging the same with Cameron and team applauding standing behind. If not for the briefing given by Chris Awde of Rolls-Royce and Andrew Gallagher of BAE Systems, a majority of the media would have probably witnessed the first ever ‘silent’ defence deal signing event!
Even the official press release sent out by HAL resembled a one-page essay written by a 2nd standard kid on aeroplanes.
MoD promises action: If the MoD PRO in Bangalore had to get an invitation only three hours before the high-profile event, with a telephonic apology from HAL, you can imagine the state of affairs of a 2-billion-dollar Company. “We have brought this to the notice of the highest officials in the Ministry and you can expect some developments in the next couple of days,” a senior Defence Ministry official told this blogger from Delhi. The same official had confirmed to this blogger about MoD’s intervention couple of hours before the event. However, having seen the bindaas babus of HAL as an ‘insider’, the blogger is not sure if any miracles would happen.
If it happens, then the Bangalore Media and the soon-to-be-formed Indian Defence and Aviation Writers’ Association (IDAWA) would salute AK Antony for stepping in and batting for a genuine cause. If not, the babus would continue to do the vanishing act, giving a damn to Media!

HAHAHAA! This is a joke right? If HAL had a decent marketing team, half of the emerging world would be operating Dhruvs and now we'd be receiving pre-booking orders for the LCH!

Let's face it, DRDO and HAL both don't know how to market their products and promote them at an international level. Pakistanis and Chinese are far ahead in exporting their weapons than us and this is the proof that we don't do enough.

I've once been to a stall in Delhi expo and I've seen 3 lazy jokers running the stall talking as if the entire exhibition is full of their private servants. I think a private marketing company should be contracted to sell our GOI products which have potential but due to marketing inefficiency, don't get orders.

If we rely on "sarkari karmcharis" the country's defense capability around the world will be a laughing stock.

We dont need to export any thing for now.

Our own armed forces are using outdated weapons and we r thinking abt exporting them.

produce the LCH for the Army and AF first,Produce the Dhruvs for the CRPF for combating the Maoists,produce the LCA for our Airforce,produce the AJT for our budding pilots.

Then we can think abt exporting.

Who told you this? First of all, that was just a recommendation. The stuff that's been canceled is an international tender for Coast Guard. I think HAL itself will domestically supply Dhruvs instead of some foreign country taking the benefits.

Our police isn't as rich as US or German police to afford this. Its time first we improve our armed forces then deal with civil defense.

If this is true it is a real shame, yes the dhruv is a good utility mostly land-based helo, as the navy commented it is not good enough to operate from ships in ASW mode or rescue mode. International helo companies have expertise and knowledge in how to make decent high-end helos, we shouldn't rule them out just because ther are not "indigenous". Loser- Indian defence forces. Time and time again these stories come up and Indian Military gets put at even further disadvantage. Wait until domestic industries can make comparable technology to international firms, and as importantly CAN stick to a timeline and budget then look at them.

It is in the Indian Defence section... try looking for thread at the lower end. I agree with our loss that you say but you should know that China has come up just because of such waiting. It only takes us longer because we don't violate IPR.
