Baby girl born in mid-air
NEW DELHI: This little girl had a flying start in life - she was born aboard a Spicejet flight from Kolkata to Delhi on Friday morning.
The baby's mother, Chitra Raghav, was eight months pregnant and the due date was May 10. She and her husband, Sachin, who recently started work in Kolkata as an HR consultant, were returning to their family in Delhi where they were hoping to have a normal delivery at a good hospital. Destiny had other plans.
The couple's flight departed at 7.15am and within 30 minutes, Chitra started complaining of discomfort. "Initially, we were scheduled to fly back on April 15 but decided to move the date ahead to give us sufficient time back home. When Chitra said she was uncomfortable I told her it couldn't be anything serious since her due date was more than a month later. But by 8.30am her pain had become severe and she became very restless," said Sachin.
The couple contacted the cabin crew that immediately sprung into action. They cleared the rear end of the cabin and laid a mattress for Chitra to lie on. A doctor couple on board volunteered their services and helped Chitra deliver her baby at 9.02am. "Dr Arpita Maiti, working with Midnapur Medical College in Kharagpur, helped with the delivery. Since there were no surgical tools available, she had to cut the umbilical cord with a blade and then tie it up with a rubber band," said sources.
Dr Maiti's report said the mother could walk five minutes after the delivery and her placenta was handed over to the husband.
The flight landed in Delhi at 9.30am and shortly after that the airport ambulance reached the aircraft. Airport sources said that a doctor from Medanta received the couple at the apron area and the family was taken to a private hospital in Gurgaon.
"It was a scary experience, but the help we received from the airline, the doctors and the airport staff was commendable. The mother and baby are doing well," said Sachin. Sources in SpiceJet said that the airline was planning to gift something special to the baby but a final decision was yet to be taken.
