B-school in US? Nah. Indians discover Destination India

MUMBAI: The great Indian dream of pursuing an MBA in the US seems to be on the wane. India has been ahead of China when it comes to flooding US B-schools with GMAT ( Graduate Management Admission Test) scores: from 2005 to 2009, US B-schools received the maximum number of GMAT scores from India. But this year, the dragon has beaten the tiger.

So where have all the Indian students gone? They seem to have found a new destination for management education. It's called India.

Here's a look at the facts. In testing year 2005 (July 1, 2004 to June 30, 2005), when over 43,000 GMAT scores were sent to management programmes in the US by Indians, a mere 19,196 GMAT scores came from Chinese. Till 2009, India maintained its lead over China. But in testing year 2010 (July 2009-June 2010), for the first time the number of Chinese far outnumbered Indians: 80,000 to the Indians' 65,361.

Ashok Sarathy, vice-president, GMAT Programme, feels this may have a lot to do with the emergence of high-quality management education in India. "There's been a growing interest in the local market among Indian management aspirants, with high-quality programmes being offered in India. They are now seeing tremendous opportunity in their own economy and in Indian degrees,'' Sarathy told TOI from the US.

Sarathy's views are borne out by the statistics. In testing year 2010, over 17,000 Indians sent in their GMAT scores to Indian institutions. Meanwhile, only 1,743 GMAT scores from mainland China (and 5,184 from Hong Kong) were sent to Chinese B-schools in the same period.

While the last five years saw only a marginal increase in GMAT scores sent by Chinese in their own country (but a steady growth in those sent to the US), there has been an almost four-fold rise in the number of Indians applying to Indian management institutions—from 4,879 in 2005 to 17,087 in 2010.

U.S will always remain attractive for Indians......far more attractive than Indian management schools.....while the IIM's ,IIPM like universities....set you up for life with staggering salaries...about 1 to 2 % of the student fraternity possess the requisite skills for admission. there...as it is the CAT exam is similar perhaps even tougher than the Gmat .....the quality and rep of the other institutes dont catch the eye of many company recruiting officials.....

If a country wants to be the next superpower, they must have the best eductaion system in the world.

China and India should improve their own education system in their own countries and their own students should support their own institutions instead of studying abroad, and they should attract students form different countries to study in their universities like like how it is in the U.S. and the U.K. That'll be a step toward becoming a global power.

indeed yes.....I cant speak about china but in India the education system is quite flawed .....there is an over emphasis on rote learning.....modern methods of learning through videos , audios, practical applications of work and other innovative ideas are negligible in most schools and colleges.....high standards of English education is also maintain in a few select places....teachers pressurize students for marks rather than trying to genuinely interest them in the subject....also the is negligible attention towards extra curriculars in most schools.....and to top it all quality education is highly expensive....too expensive for the likes of parents with limited means to send their kids to....enormous private investment is urgently required in this area.....

I studied under Indian education system and it tell you its way better than Pakistan. Those who think dont have enough should pay a visit to Pakistan education system which turns talents into repeating parrots.
