Visiting Danish Minister for Trade and Investment Pia Olsen Dyhr on Thursday said Bangladesh is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and it has much potentiality to achieve Middle Income Country (MIC) status within the next decade.

She, however, said Bangladesh must increase foreign investment in order to attain MIC status. The Danish minister said this while speaking at a function at Westin hotel in the capital.

She said the demand for readymade garments manufactured in Bangladesh is increasing in Denmark day by day and suggested for improvement of the quality of the export-oriented products, living and workplace environment of the workers.

Pia Olsen Dyhr along with a business delegation of 12 leading Danish companies arrived here on Tuesday to strengthen bilateral trade and investment relations between Bangladesh and Denmark.

The delegation also included three Members of Parliament and officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Denmark.

Speaking on the occasion, Dilip Barua urged them to hand over developed technologies to Bangladesh and provide training facilities to create skilled manpower in ship building industries here.

He said Bangladesh has already received orders for exporting ships to the Nordic countries and the orders from Demark for importing ships from here have brightened the possibility of receiving more such orders from other countries.

He mentioned that the Ministry of Industries has already formulated an integrated national policy with a view to transforming the country into a middle income one by 2021.

Dilip Barua claimed that Bangladesh has one of the best investment-friendly environments in South Asia and said the country showed a remarkable resilience during the global economic slow-down by maintaining growth of over 6 percent.

He further said the government is actively working on increasing Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and facilitating the framework for such investment.

Danish ambassador to Bangladesh Svend Olling, president of Nordic Chamber of Commerce and Industries Arild Klokkerhaug and director of International Trade and Investment, Confederation of Danish Industry Jens Holst-Nielsen also spoke at the function.
