Cadres of Bangladesh Chhatra League swooped on activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal at Modhus Canteen in Dhaka University on Monday leaving at least 25 JCD boys injured.
Soon after the attack, the JCD central committee at a press briefing at BNP Naya Platan central office announced an indefinite strike at the campus from July 1 if the university authorities do not take punitive measures against the attackers and ensure co-existence of all students organizations in the campus.
Witnesses said the DU unit leaders of the ruling Awami League-backed BCL asked the leaders of BNP-supported JCD to leave the canteen when the later refused to withdraw a case filed against BCL activists.
Reason for Awami League attack
The JCD had filed the case against BCL leaders and workers after an attack on JCDs central committee president Sultan Salauddin Tuku in the campus on February 18.
The BCL had long been pressing the JCD men in the campus to withdraw the case, JCD sources said.
Witness account of attack
Witnesses said more than 50 BCL men led by Sayeed Majumdar, Rifat Hossain Ziku and Mamunur Rashid on Monday attacked the Chhatra Dal cadres with iron rods, pipes, stumps, sticks and chairs at Modhus Canteen.
The JCD men ran helter-skelter, some taking shelter in teachers rooms at the arts faculty, from where they were later rescued by the university authorities, witnesses said.
The injured included JCD DU unit convenor Abdul Matin, senior joint convenor Obaidul Huq Nasir, joint convenor Mohidul Islam Hiro, Asaduzzaman Asad, Moniruzzaman Resin, central committee members Minhazul Islam Bhuiyan, Zahidul Hasan Babu, Moinul Islam, Nazmus Sakib, Majedul Islam and Swapan Kumar Mondol.
The injured were admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and Islami Bank Hospital in the city.
Sources said the JCD leaders had entered Modhus Canteen at about 10:00am and the BCL leaders came over and asked them to leave the premises as the JCD men did not withdraw the case filed against BCL activists.
Seeing no response, the BCL cadres suddenly attacked them with iron rods, sticks and chairs, said the witnesses.
The student affairs adviser of BNP, Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anne, told New Age that BCL went wild after the AL-supported candidate lost the Chittagong mayor election. They are now out to foil the June 27 hartal called by the BNP, he added.
Talking to reporters, JCD president Sultan Salahuddin Tuku also demanded resignation of Dhaka University vice-chancellor AAMS Arefin Siddique and proctor Saiful Islam Khan for their failure to ensure congenial atmosphere in the campus.
VC Arefin Siddique and proctor Saiful Islam Khan have been assisting the government backed BCL activists to establish a reign of terror in the campus. We demand immediate arrest of BCL leaders and activists who assaulted the JCD leaders without any provocation. Sultan Salahuddin Tuku said.
As part of the announced programme, the JCD would hold protest rallies at all district headquarters and educational institutions today.
Besides, the opposition backed student wing would hold view exchange meetings with all students organizations and Dhaka University Journalists Association and Dhaka University Teachers Association on June 29.
The press briefing was addressed among others by JCD central committee general secretary Amirul Islam Alim where the students affairs secretary of BNP Shahiduddin Chowdhury Anee was present.
