AVIC may end talks on US defense contracts over leaks, report says

Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) may stop further negotiations with US Aerospace regarding bids for US defense contracts after details of the talks were exposed by overseas media, the National Financial Weekly reported Thursday.

An AVIC spokesman refused to comment on the report by the publication under the Xinhua News Agency.

"Any information that is not released by the publicity headquarters of AVIC cannot represent our company's viewpoints and we have nothing to say on media reports on the matter," said spokesman Ding Zhiyong.

The UK-based Defence Weekly reported in January that the State-owned AVIC is preparing proposals, in collaboration with existing partner US Aerospace, to bid for the US Navy's VXX helicopter program and the US Air Force T-X project to procure advanced jet trainers.

The National Financial Weekly quoted Zhang Wei, who works for the supply chain management and purchase department of AVIC International Holding Corporation, as saying that AVIC has been in contact with US Aerospace for nearly a year over possible airplane parts and manufacturing devices export deals, but no actual movements have been made between the two companies.

"AVIC has never signed any agreement with US Aerospace and it's just an idea on the two companies cooperating on bids for US defense contracts," said Zhang.

According to the US Aerospace website, the company and AVIC International Holding Corporation entered a strategic cooperation agreement in September last year, setting a framework for collaborating in the manufacture, import and export of aircraft components and equipment.

The parties are expected to bid on at least $100 million in potential orders in the first year and have agreed to negotiate in good faith to invest together in the US, on projects including the purchase of manufacturing facilities and AVIC's potential purchase of US Aerospace stock, the website report said.

However, Ding said the company has never released any information on the issue.

Ding also said that he is not sure if Zhang Wei really works for AVIC since the corporation has so many branch offices, which makes it hard to confirm Zhang's identity.
