I feel like this agreement is a prelude to the US basing nuclear weapons / missiles in Australia...
Australia might say that they are not pursuing military, or even civilian, nuclear capability... but they will just say that the nukes belong to the US and is not theirs... In any event it will simply make Australia a prime target in a hot war... which is totally worrisome for the ASEAN neighborhood..

That being said.. I also find the statement from Scott Morrison regarding Australia not pursuing nuclear capability as ridiculous, and likely, untruthful... How would they expect to build, operate, and maintain SSN subs locally without having the nuclear related knowledge, tech and infrastructure..? Especially for a sub with a HEU fueled reactor...? If the plan was simply to buy or lease a readily available nuke sub, be it Virginia or Astute class SSN's, then yeah... it's somewhat still believable... as we can expect the manufacture, maintenance, etc will be done in the US or UK while Australia is only operating it..

We don't have to shout anything. China is doing it all for us. Just cause China never invade the U.S. doesn't mean anything. Japan didn't invade the U.S. and they had no plans to do so yet we still had a war with them.

Indonesia and Malaysia are concerned of Australia submarines however they are not concerned of chinese submarines. The first will come in a decade while the other country has it now and wants to build more.
I wouldn’t say Indonesia is a coward but Malaysia will receive a medal.

You seem to forget that the US has over 50 larger and more advanced nuclear submarines. Are Australians so much better than Americans? They can do what the US can't with 12 small submarines. The most irrational part of the whole China scare story is that everyone forgot about the US Navy's 50 submarines. It seems like in the blink of an eye that the US Navy went from being the most powerful navy in the world to a crying girl cruise ship.

This is a very big submarine, not small.

Once in ocean, it will be very difficult to detect. But once the sub move into SCS or near China coast, they are dead meat. Plenty of sonar sensors.

Nevertheless a few km from Taiwan Pacific coast is deep enough and near enough from China.

Wouldn't that be the same for Chinese subs as well? I mean China isn't the only one that can deploy sensors whether on the seafloor or UUVs. You have Taiwan, South Korea, Japan, Indonesia, U.S. etc.

One can see China continental shelf protrude quite far out. There is no room for sub here. In the past, sub can still wiggle around the Sprately Islands, as the are quite deep. Not now. Because China has built up lots of Islands and laid her sonars.

Western Pacific just off Taiwan is great for Sub. Water is deep., especially given the fact that China has not yet unify Taiwan. The sub can fire cruise missile and hit China from here. It is about 400km.

Weapons are useful only in war. Will Australia go to war with China alone? If the US and China declare war, 12 4000 ton submarines will not make a big difference, maybe just a week's consumption.

If Australia is going to war with China, its usually the U.S. first in front in the first place meaning the war started between the U.S. and China and Australia followed. Can't imagine China just going to war with Australia, not over nuclear submarines either.

So, what practical impact will Australia's submarines have on China? After the war between China and the US, I estimate the US had at least 200 submarines.
