Australia must choose between United States and China: US Army official

SYDNEY: A senior US soldier said on Thursday Australia must choose between a stronger US alliance or closer ties with China, and urged Canberra to take a tougher stance against Chinese claims in the South China Sea.

"I think the Australians need to make a choice ... it's very difficult to walk this fine line between balancing the alliance with the United States and the economic engagement with China," US Army Assistant Chief of Staff Colonel Tom Hanson said on Australian Broadcasting Corp. Radio.

"There's going to have to be a decision as to which one is more of a vital national interest for Australia," he said. Hanson said the comments reflected his personal view and were not necessarily that of the US government.

The comments follow the publication of a parliamentary booklet warning Australian lawmakers to treat Chinese motives in the region with caution.

Australia, a staunch US ally, has previously drawn criticism from China for running surveillance flights over disputed islands in the South China Sea, and supporting US freedom of navigation exercises there.

However, Australia has not conducted a unilateral freedom of navigation voyage of its own.

"Clearly China believes that they have an opportunity and they feel empowered to flout that, and a demonstration by Australia would be welcome," Hanson said.

Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said in response to Hanson's comments that the US role in the Indo-Pacific region was as important now as it had ever been.

"We are balancing relationships between our largest strategic ally and our largest trading partner with deft diplomacy, consistency and pragmatism,” Bishop said in a statement.

China is Australia's biggest trading partner and a large source of foreign investment, spending $11.1 billion on Australian assets, mostly property, in 2015, accounting and advisory firm KPMG and the University of Sydney have said.

Isn't Australia firmly with US already?

"With us or against us" moment for Australia.

Yanks needs to take a chill pill. World is now multi polar. Their rants are losing them allies left, right and center. Pakistan, long left the shores, Saudi are reeling thanks to American silly games in ME, Turkish are pissed off with this Gulen affair. they are giving the impression of being their own worst enemies.

What Hanson said is not a "rant". He was stating the obvious. If Australia wants to have freedom to navigate the SCS in the future, without begging permission or giving quid pro quos to China, then Australia needs to support international efforts to protect navigational freedoms all over the world, and especially in the SCS because of china's threats and claims. Personally, as an American, I am happy to lose allies who don't share our values.

This represents a unique opportunity to Australia ,they can cut a deal either side .With China they can negotiate SCS transit and becomes Ally .

I wonder why USA doesnt give such ultimatums to India whether in case of China or Russia or Iran.

Btw, I think Australia has already made a choice.

I don't think Americans would worry if they lose allies like Pak, Saudi and Turkey.

To avoid diplomatic tensions with US and China Australia can choose India.

You shouldnt comment on matters which are non of your business. Aussies got big financial interests with China and if you know your geography, even though they are your anglo saxon cousins, but the trade make all sense with China.

For the bold part, I can only say, good luck!! You are well on your way.

I don't think Americans would worry if they lose allies like Pak, Saudi and Turkey.

They will worry when these countries join the opposing camp.

dont worry
we all know thor stands with captain America

They aren't going to "pick". Nor do they have to. Australia will continue to support America's stance on the SCS and provide it with military bases for naval navigation in the region. Beyond that, it will maintain good relations with both countries.

. .
Well to be honest there have been quite a few far wars in last 20-30 year period

. .
The man was offering his personal opinion, he even stated as much. His opinion in no way reflects the US Gov's view. It could reflect the view of the US military brass though.
