I thought about what you said and try to find the right english words to explain. I think its called Machiavellism.

For me only one nation counts, Greece. No matter what happens, we must always and at all time stay on top. The fate of others is completly meaningless.

From 2015 Greece was in hard economic situation. There was a pojnt where we were at the mercy of the EU because it was our only partner in this. USA did not get involved and we also tried to get support of Russia, which failed. In the end we got Chinas support and managed to play both sides against each other. China send support, meanwhile rest of EU and USA worried and because our important strategic position, eased their restrictions. China is a tool for us, which gives us more economic independence. A tool which is dropped in the waste bin as soon as it is not needed anymore.

In geopolitics Greece has only two important things, counter the Turks and push the migrants away. In both aspects only EU and NATO can be useful, China can in no way help in that regard. So its all a game of thrones. The moment we need USA and EU more, China is dropped. Meanwhile it serves as scource of income but at same time is held at bay. For example were chinese companies cut out of many deals here recently.


And beside that, i might add that i guess the chinese are aware of this. At the moment its a relationship based only on temporary interests.

To be honest, I seriously doubt that the Australian government will incite riots in Solomon Islands for Taiwan.
Because this will completely infuriate China and lead to greater retaliation against Australia.
