As Dr. Pipes points out in his latest update, the judge rejected the request of the defense attorney:
If any juror -- regardless of race, creed, national origin, sex -- cant accept the instruction of the court ... that juror doesnt belong on the jury, Vitaliano said, according to the newspaper. link
That jibes with my experience: in America jurors are evaluated on the basis of their individual conscience, not their group identity. Jurors may be asked by the judge if they can put aside their prejudices and consider the matter at hand impartially. A juror who replies, "no" and explains why will likely be tossed off the jury.
