Sectarian attack: Attack on bus in Kohistan leaves 18 dead

PESHAWAR: At least 18 people were killed Tuesday when gunmen opened fire on a bus on Karakoram Highway in the Kohistan district of Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, police said.

The bus, owned by Mashaburum private bus service, was en route from Rawalpindi to Gilgit with 39 passengers on board.

“All the people on board were Shia, and at the moment it looks like they were targeted by armed men from the local Sunni community,” a senior police official told Reuters.

“Armed men hiding on both sides of the road attacked the bus,” local police chief Mohammad Ilyas said.

“Initial reports said 18 people have died and eight wounded,” he added.

Police officials said the bus came under attack in an area inhabited by two Sunni tribes about 165 km (102 miles) north of Islamabad.

The ambush happened near the town of Harban Nullah. DCO Chilas confirmed the incident.

The deceased and injured have been shifted to Chilas Hospital.

Interior Minister Rehman Malik has sought an investigative report from the Inspector-General of Gilgit-Baltistan.

Sectarian attack: Attack on bus in Kohistan leaves 18 dead – The Express Tribune

The violence worsened immediately after September 11 and the expulsion of the Taliban from Afghanistan.[38] In 2002, 12 Shia Hazara police cadets were gun downed in Quetta. In 2003, the main Shia Friday Mosque was attacked in Quetta, killing 53 worshippers. March 2, 2004, at least 42 persons were killed and more than 100 wounded when a procession of the Shia Muslims was attacked by rival Sunni extremists at Liaquat Bazaar in Quetta.[39] Separately, on October 7, 2004, a car bomb killed 40 members of an extremist Sunni organization in Multan. 300 people died during 2006.[40]

However, since September 11, there has been an overall decline in violence, as Saudi sources are more reluctant to fund Sunni extremists in the wake of increased scrutiny of Saudi ties to hardline extremists.

On December 28, 2009, as many as 40 Shias were killed in an apparent suicide bombing in Karachi. The bomber attacked a Shia procession which was held to mark Ashoura.[41] Since June 2010 in Karachi, Sipah-e-Sahaba is involved in the target killing of seven innocent bystanders and intellectuals; all were from the Twelver Shia Muslim community. Sectarian riots as well as target killing of doctors in the provincial capital have been sending alarm bells to the present democratic system. Karachi had witnessed similar sectarian tension in the early 1980s when then President Zia-ul-Haq was in power. The military regime of those years had been backing certain groups to strengthen its rule and Karachi underwent worst situation after the sectarian riots. The Shia-Sunni clashes had started from the same section of the city (i.e. Godra Colony in New Karachi) after a small incident, and subsequently the clashes gripped the entire city, that hasn't stopped yet and continues.

In early September 2010, three separate attacks were reported in different parts of Pakistan. The first one took place on September 1 in Lahore where at least 35 Shias were killed and 160 unknown people injured during a procession. The second one was reported to have taken place in Mardan on Ahmadiyyas in which at least one person was killed. The third attack also occurred on September 3 but in the city of Quetta which killed around 56 people during another procession calling for solidarity with Palestinians.[42]

On December 16, a mortar attack killed nine (9) people, including women and children in Hangu, a town that has been a flash point for sectarian clashes between Shia and Sunni communities in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Province, near tribal area. On the same day in another attack one child was killed and 28 people were wounded in Peshawar, the capital of KP province, as Shia Muslims marked Ashura.

From wikipedia.... continue violence against shia community in Pakistan

are the anti shia organisations are still active in Pakistan like sipah-e-sahiba and other ? i think their leaders also participated in Difa-e-pakistan and glorified the violence.

These shias seem helpless. It is just a sustained one sided brutality. Unless they take it sitting down, they would never be let to live in peace.
whatever you are saying is piece of crap . i have many shia friends and they are even appointed at high posts even in army , police , judiciary and in Govt how they are helpless ?
they are living peaceful lives here . Few incidents and the act of few criminal minded people does not concluded that its genocide and blah blah blah

Yaa...I agree with you..if you see the ongoing violence against them...the tribal area is no go area for Shias.

these organisations are banned and anyone who belonged to these group is arrested and had trial in courts if there are enough evidences they get punishment from courts

I hope you have the same opinion about Indian Muslims and the communal riots in India.

you can call them sectarian clashes not a genocide . many sunni and shia both died in different bomb blasts but we dont use word genocide for that .

But most of such killings either target Shias or Ahmadis in Pakistan.. Attacks on Sunnis are negligible in comparison and most probably are one off frustrated retaliations
