ATTACK HELECOPTER FOR BSF

India's Border Security Force to utilise satellites to curb infiltration

New Delhi, India, – India's Border Security Force (BSF) would soon be making use of remote sensing and digital technologies to improve intelligence, curb infiltration and protect sensitive installations.

"Remote sensing and satellite technologies have become an essential part of security world wide, particularly in the field of defence," BSF Director General A K Mitra said while inaugurating a two-day training programme on 'Remote sensing and GIS technology' for BSF officers organised by the Centre for Disaster Management Studies under the aegis of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University.

The BSF chief said India is a huge country sharing more than 14,000 km of border with six neighbouring nations.

"Most of the border areas are inhospitable terrain like ice-capped mountains of Himalayas or swift rivulets. Infiltration become easy in these areas if inadequately attended," Mitra said adding that objective of the training on use of satellite imaging and digital data is to put forward a suggestion on border management that can be improved and automated to the maximum possible extent.

"Developments in remote sensing, GIS, GPS and others can thus be fully exploited to safeguard our borders obtaining high resolution multi-sensor imagery and integrating at near real time with geographic information system to give that critical edge to security personnel," said Vice-Chancellor of Guru Gobind Singh Indraprasta University who attended the inagural meeting.
