Assam to get its first Metro Rail

GUWAHATI: The Assam cabinet has approved the project report for a Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) for Guwahati, and the setting up of the Guwahati Metro Rail Corporation Limited (GMRCL).

Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi will lay the foundation stone for the Metro project in Khanapara area on February 29, a statement issued by the Chief Minister’s Office said on Tuesday.

The state cabinet under Gogoi’s chairmanship approved the detailed project report (DPR) for the MRTS and the setting up of GMRCL for implementing the project on Saturday.

The statement issued on Tuesday said the 203 km Metro corridor will be completed in three phases.

Phase I will cover a length 61.4 km, and will have four corridors — Dharapur-Narangi (elevated), M.G. Road to Khanapara (underground), Jalukbari to Khanapara (elevated) 19.4 km and ISBT to Paltanbazar (elevated).

There will be 54 stations in the first phase.

The trains will have a carrying capacity of up to 975 passengers each.

The projected cost including land is estimated at Rs.18,020crore.

While the Assam government and central government will share 20 percent each of the total cost, local bodies will contribute Rs.350 crore, while the remaining Rs.10,074 crore will be funded through soft loans from funding agencies with guarantees from the central government.

GMRCL will be a wholly-owned company of the Assam government and will look after the operation and maintenance of the project.

The company will be later converted into joint ownership (50:50) of the state and central governments.

Congratulations Assam,Great to see N-E Indian states getting modern transport systems.
Any idea how long it will take to build it?
Hyderabad is almost done,perhaps by next year Metro rail will be running.

Very good news.. But a point of caution regarding 3 aspects..
  1. One is of course project execution and associated delays
  2. Corruption by State Government and local bodies including GMRCL
  3. One has to look at seismic activity aspect a bit more closely owing to Assam being in a high risk zone. I hope they take collaboration from some other experienced folks in a similar region or position like say Japan.
Chief challenges includes

  • Tunneling and elevated tracks wont be easy owing to already space constraints in Guwahati. Yet its a very welcome development
  • Besides this owing to rainfall situation, maintaining cleanliness in station and inside trains wont be so easy.. Its going to be a challenging task and will require a humongous manpower in various stations for maintaining good standards..
  • Also will Assam get additional electricity from any Grid.. I believe present capacities and arrangement wont support Metro project...

But congratulation to all NE folks.. its a welcome development

Looking at the pace by which people are migrating to Guwahati, the traffic volume's gonna get even more. So I think it's good enough to start thinking about it such projects. Besides this will be an incentive to smart city project.

Then it might take even longer than you say, if congress retains power in Assam again in Elections. :D

It's not gonna even materialize if Congress comes to power again. You should read about the Bogibeel rail bridge. The project was started during Vajpayee's rule but even after the lapse of 11 years the project is yet to be completed. :lol:

I hope for our countrys sake and N-E sake Congress doesn't retain its power in Assam general elections next year.Otherwise it will be Jungle raj 2.0 for you too Assamese. :lol:

Very difficult to materialize underground metro sections and for elevated metro, finding land to put pillars would be hassle.
It would be interesting to see the plans. Next generation might get chance to travel in it.

Bogibeel Bridge is one such prime example to look upon :P
