Frustrated with the electric power situation in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P), Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan had demanded that the government hand over control of power distribution in the province to him.

Little did Imran expect that his proposal will be welcomed by the government.

Federal Minister for Water and Power Khawaja Asif, while talking to Express News on Monday evening, welcomed the offer and said that the government was ready to hand over the distribution and recovery network in K-P to the provincial government.

“If he can help us in this regard and improve the system there [in K-P], then that is good.”

Asked if control of the Peshawar Electric Supply Company (PESCO) would be handed over immediately, Asif said that was doable.

“Yes it [transfer of control] can be done immediately. He [Imran] can take control of Pesco and handle the distribution of electricity and recovery.”

The government has come under fire for not fully realising its election promise of controlling prolonged power cuts, line losses and electricity theft, and Asif defended the government on this.

“This is not about us failing. Over the past three, four months, there has been a reduction in line losses and theft. We do not claim there has been radical change, but there has been reduction, there has been improvement.”

“If the K-P government believes that they can bring marked improvement in the system, then they should do it. If someone is trying to do good, we should not obstruct that.”

Asked how soon can control be given to the PTI-led government in K-P, Asif said that the government was willing to hand it over control in the new year.

“He [Imran Khan] proposed January 1, he can take charge of Pesco from January 1, 2014.”

“What he [Imran] wants he can do, we can give him control of the entire distribution company.”

Under the landmark 18th Amendment, power is one of the subjects that is supposed to be devolved to provinces. However, due to a multitude of issues, this has not happened so far.

The should get control of PESCO. Then see how the PMLN govt. start to pinch there electricity from here or there to prove they are inefficient.

PTI has a lot to prove and with adversaries as dubious as PPP and PLMN around, their task becomes all the more difficult.

As a principle, the provinces should have control over their generation & distribution with federal oversight to shift load to where its needed. Easier said than done.

The biggest problem with PESCO is not the supply but the collection. With areas having collection rates in single digit how can PESCO maintain an uninterrupted supply? You don't sell to those who are not willing to pay. The people of KPK who pay their electricity bills have more right to the electricity than the people who do not. However, the anti-theft drive has lately only been confined to Punjab with the rest of three provinces evading the hard to take political decision.

Post 18 amendment, they do have. However, there is a distinction that whether the project has been errected by the Federal or Provincial government. Wonder why Shahbaz Sharif is so tirelessly working for setting up energy infrastructure in Punjab? it is because such projects will be under the control of Government of Punjab.

the best thing for both PMLN and PTI is to give them room for performance

when nawaz won majority in assembly, i said thank god, now atleast one may not say that hey, we didn't get majority so we couldn't make every decision, and alliance was the reason of their failure, one may not say tht hey, our governments couldn't complete five year tenure

one might not say tht hey, we formed a government in KPK but we had limited authority to perform

one may not say we couldn't bring naya pakistan because we were incharge of a little province of KPK and one might not say that we couldn't make roshan pakistan because establishment continuously troubled us

so you guys have all the time to improve or prepare yourselves to be shipped out like PMLQ, PPP

PTI and PMLN are very similar parties which people don't realise, you can even see their performance is very similar both in punjab and KPK that is dismal

pti also said that electricity be charged at 1.20 rs and not 10 rs or 12 rs to kpk as it generates it there.

PTI has also started to negotiate to bring all kpk parties to APC so that fair price be charged to kpk that is 1 to 2 rs per unit

did "thakha lahore" gives there crops, flour, sugar etc to kpk and other province at low price ? the answer is no while this sharif mafia charges 10 rs for 2 rs electricity unit to kpk

now hand over the distribution as well as low electricity price and feed "Takhat Lahore" at even more higher prices of electricity

and this time sharifs can not blame ppp "sindhi government" for unfair distribution of electricity as pmln is in government in Federation
