Asif wins Asian snooker title in Doha

KARACHI: World champion Mohammad Asif added another feather to his cap by winning the 2nd ACBS Asian 6-Reds Snooker Championship 2013 at Doha on Monday.


According to the information provided by the Pakistan Billiards & Snooker Federation (PBSF), Asif overcame Aamir Sarkosh of Iran 7-4 in the keenly contested final with the frame scores of 43-0, 48-0, 48-12, 12-36, 30-34, 34-31, 40-9, 0-41, 0-41, 54-4, 41-13 to capture his second major title in less than six months.


Earlier in the day, Asif overpowered Laxman Rawat of India 6-2 in the semi-finals with the frame scores of 61-6, 71-0, 37-31, 27-31, 36-9, 1-68, 58-8, 42-30.


He had overwhelmed compatriot Mohammad Sajjad in the quarter-finals late Sunday evening.


In the pre-quarter-finals, Asif had whipped Mohammad Shehab of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) 5-1 while Sajjad had routed Wang Zepeng of China 5-0.


Both Asif and Sajjad had reached the knockout stage of the competition having remained unbeaten in the league round. A total of 37 cueists from 16 countries contested the 6-Reds tourney with top two cueists from each of the eight groups having advanced to the pre-quarters.


Asif had emerged the Group F champion by hammering Mohanna Obaidly of Qatar 5-2, and Mohammad Khaled Al Quraini of Jordan and Ali Jalil Ali of Iraq by the similar 5-1 scoreline.


Sajjad had claimed the top position in the Group D by outwitting Bashar Hussain of Qatar 5-3, Mohammad Shehab of UAE 5-1 and Laxman Singh Rawat of India 5-3.


Asif and Sajjad will stay back in Doha for another couple of weeks as they will watch the youthful duo of Hamza Akbar and Mohammad Majid Ali represent Pakistan in the inaugural Asian Team Championship starting there on Tuesday (today)


The Pakistan quartet will then receive training at the Qatar Snooker Academy from qualified coaches. They will return home on June 10.
