While Japan’s tense relationship with China dominates headlines worldwide, the strategic rivalry between Beijing and India is more likely to shape Asian power dynamics in the coming decades
Nowadays, many people seem to be more relaxed than ever about nationality, with the internet enabling them to forge close connections with distant cultures and people. But states remain extremely sensitive about their borders’ inviolability. After all, territory, including land, oceans, air space, rivers, and seabeds, is central to a country’s identity, and shapes its security and foreign policy.

States can respond to territorial disputes either by surrendering some aspects of sovereignty, thus weakening their power and influence, or by adopting a more robust national-defence strategy aimed at fending off current challenges and precluding future threats. Today, many Asian countries are choosing the latter option.

Consider the territorial disputes roiling the Indian Ocean and other East Asian regions, sparked by China’s repeated — and increasingly assertive — efforts to claim sovereignty over vast maritime areas. As China’s incursions reignite long-smouldering disagreements and threaten to destabilise the regional status quo, countries throughout Asia are reconsidering their strategic positions.

For example, the Philippines is revamping its security strategy by enhancing cooperation with the US — China’s counterweight in the region — only two decades after it closed two major American military installations, the naval base at Subic Bay and Clark Air Base. Vietnam, too, has strengthened its ties with the US. And, after decades of absence, America has resumed training programmes for Indonesia’s military.

More significant, Japan’s leaders are now openly debating ways to transform the country’s post-Second World War pacifism into a much more assertive nationalism. In fact, in August, the Japan Maritime Self-Defence Force unveiled the helicopter destroyer Izumo, whose structure and capabilities resemble those of an aircraft carrier, with possible offensive applications.

This emerging strategic shift will likely have far-reaching consequences, raising the stakes of Sino-Japanese sparring over islands in the East China Sea.

But, while Japan’s tense relationship with China dominates headlines worldwide, the strategic rivalry between China and India is more likely to shape Asian power dynamics in the coming decades. And recent events suggest that China knows it.

In April, a platoon of Chinese People’s Liberation Army (PLA) border-security personnel crossed the so-called ‘line of actual control; into India’s Depsang Valley in Ladakh to erect an encampment, where they remained for almost three weeks. China’s leaders have yet to explain what prompted the incursion — but there is no shortage of speculation.

Some claim that the local PLA commander initiated the “stand-off”, while others contend that China’s new president, Xi Jinping, was using the transgression to assert his authority over the PLA. The incursion has even been linked to the scandal surrounding Chongqing’s disgraced former Communist Party chief, Bo Xilai, who had close ties with high-ranking PLA and security-services officers. But the most likely explanation is the simplest one: China was deliberately asserting its authority over the disputed border.

As it stands, India and China are openly competing for influence in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Nepal, and Bangladesh. So far, they have largely relied on economic and commercial mechanisms, especially rival port and pipeline projects, to secure their positions.

China is not allowing its economic slowdown to derail its efforts to enlarge and modernise its navy and expand its commercial interests around Eurasia’s southern rim. It has been investing or demonstrating interest in deep-water port projects in Kenya, Tanzania, and Bangladesh, and it has been directly involved in financing and constructing Indian Ocean ports in Myanmar, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.

Just as China is helping to develop Pakistan’s port of Gwadar, India is helping to develop Iran’s Chabahar port 70 kilometres away. Chabahar is not useful only to counter China; it will serve as a vital link for India to transport goods to Afghanistan, Central Asia, and beyond. India could even develop a major communication hub with the port as its nexus.

Moreover, India is working to safeguard its naval superiority over China. In August, the reactor aboard India’s first indigenously built nuclear submarine, INS Arihant, was activated, bringing the country one step closer to realising its long-sought goal of a ‘nuclear triad’ — the capability to launch nuclear weapons from land, air, and sea. Just three days later, India launched the aircraft carrier INS Vikrant.

But, as The Economist observed, “rarely does nemesis follow hubris so quickly.” Indeed, just two days after the Vikrant’s launch, explosions at the naval dockyard in Mumbai sank INS Sindhurakshak – one of the ten Kilo-class submarines that form the backbone of India’s aging conventional-submarine fleet — killing 18 crew members.

Perhaps China’s apparent economic, strategic, and military advantages will prove less significant than many believe, especially given continuing uncertainty over the terms of America’s strategic ‘pivot’ towards Asia. Indeed, with the US on their side, either Japan or India could conceivably tip the scales in its own favour. But one thing is clear: A great game is beginning among Asia’s great powers, and there are scant rules in place to manage how it will be played.

India is far too weak to be taken seriously.

And no, Indian navy is not 'superior' to the PLAN.
Having a couple of tiny carriers means jack.

India is decades behind China in Naval power.

As much as India rises, it will always remain the poor man's China.

India is a defeated country in the eyes of Chinese people.

Really .Good luck with that.
But we can see the real smoking of Chinese leaders when Shinzo Abe attended Indian Republic day celebration.
China is third rate cheap country in the eye of Indians. In our area China is well known for fake products .very cheap products.Sometimes we wonder how can they flood our market with their junk products.
You dont know India. For chinese eyes ,power is aggressive with loud mouth that is considerably criticizing neighbour countries and yes also backstabbing.
But for India power is good diplomacy and protection of our national integrity.
You what happens when a country like India take action for their integrity in like in 1967.
If you dont know then google that .

.
The Chinese military will be kept cooped up like chicken by the world. Its lack of quality makes it an excellent target practice for militaries that actually can fight.

Cheap goods for cheap people.

Indians are looked down by Chinese from all across the world. Go to Hong Kong and how they treat Indians as very low class people.

We have beaten you, bullied you and and dismantled the spine of India.

That's why we look down on Indians. To be blunt, you are behind us in economic power, military power, political power, technological level, space program, sports and social indicators.

Why should we respect Indians? Why should we have any respect for a country that's significantly weaker than us and people that has achieved nothing?
Your people were ruled for 200 years by the British Empire and now just a vassal state to the American empire.
Why should we respect Indians that have no problem doing the slave work for the white man decade after decade?

More importantly, how do you expect us to respect you when you don't even respect yourselves?

India is a defeated country in our eyes. In China, Indians are only known for rape, defecating in the streets, slums, mass starvation, rubbish all over the streets, rude, arrogant and curry eating.

Do you have proof of a war in 1967? Video or pictures?

The Chinese military will be kept cooped up like chicken by the world. Its lack of quality makes it an excellent target practice for militaries that actually can fight.

Unfortunately for India, you're not one of the militaries that can actually fight.
Last April proved India's lack of spine for a fight.

India was boasting how now India is ready to take on China last year during the 50th anniversary of 1962, but when our army invaded India, that boasting became just empty air.
We called your bluff and the Indian dictatorship proved its as spineless as it was in 1962.

India has nothing to hurt China in the SCS.

But we are building military bases in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Maldives.

India is a poor man's China.

the bases is not gonna affect us.....rather it will increase tensions which will result in India joining the anti china nexus with US,Japan and other countries...........these small countries cant do anything............

yes it will hurt china bcoz India will be exploring oil and other things in those regions which china claims as its region.....
a peaceful India is in for of china........a war will destroy everything

India has been exploring oil in SCS but found no oil due to lack of money and lack of technology and technical expertise.

Your neighbours partnering with us is your worst nightmare.

India has been part of the anti-China axis for 60 years.

you donot understand.....its not about the oil but the region which is claimed by 2 countries........

no we are not part of anti China nexus, infact we never were.........china was never seen as an enemy but a threat due to its large military size.......but time is changing.........bcoz of china's bullying nature in NE states, aiding Pak with key techs and other things.......India is now thinking of joining the nexus which can be seen by the govt. veiled criticism of china (which our govt. was avoiding to maintain)

i say again,we donot want a war.......it will destroy both countries.......we should work peacefully

Are you freaking kidding me dude?

India has always been in the anti-China side for 60 years.

It is because of India's bullying that all your neighbours want our presence as a counter to indian belligerence.

No one wants war but Japan, India and US would prefer war. China prefer peace like last 30 years. India, Japan, US are jealous of China's peaceful rise and want to start war to destroy China's peaceful rise.

We have not been in a war for over 30 years.

when was the last time we bullied you???????
India has a lot to take care of.........i agree that US wants war,but India?????

a war will damage the Indian economy, there would be sanctions, people will die for nothing,India was never in for of war and i repeat again we have always wanted a friendly relation with china but a competitive one......you are free to disagree

Man you are just throwing junk rather then having a serious debate on such a delicate issue.....nobody not even china and India wants to have a direct war with a nuclear power nation. So a direct skirmish between India and China is unlikely to happen until and unless there is too much at stake and too much to loose.

.
I think that the next border war between China and India will be a fistfight where thousands of soldiers on both sides pummel each other but restricted from using their weapons. Fly kicking, elbows and knees also prohibited.

At least that is how I hope it will be.

Don't spew putrid gas like an overfed kid. You need to grow up and start analyzing things in the correct perspective. This post of yours has made you look not only silly but dumb!

Now go get some education before ranting through your snoot.

Jeeeez! The feather-brains we have to put up with here! Their idiocy is breathtakingly spectacular!
