KARACHI: Mobile phones will fall silent on Muharram 9 and 10 in Islamabad, provincial capitals and dozens of other cities owing to security threats.

Apart from the suspension of cellular phone services, pillion riding has also been banned in Karachi, Lahore, Quetta and twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi.

According to sources, there will be no mobile phone services in Karachi from 8am to 10pm on Ashura.

Separately, the federal government announced that mobile phone service would be shut down in Rawalpindi and Islamabad on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Metro service will also remain suspended in Islamabad.

In Lahore, district authorities said that mobile phone service would remain unavailable from 7am to 9pm.

In addition, cellular phone services will be shut down in Faisalabad, Multan, Hyderabad, Quetta and many other cities. – SAMAA

Never understood shutting down entire cellular networks for security reasons? How much productivity is loss, as a result? While protecting the safety of others, are you not compromising the safety of others? What if there's a personal emergency? There must be a better way.

they should use the jammer in designated areas for gathering instead of making whole city suffer.

No other easy and cheap way possible. Only other way is intercepting each msg, checking for terror or offensive keywords and blocking it. Would need a lot of computing power to achieve this real time and would be a big attack on privacy too.

It is understandable that terrorist and their sympathizers are upset at these measures as this is a great inconvenience for them, but most civilized people will be more than happy to go on one day without cell phone service to save lives.
