For me it's simple to understand, Australian soldiers broke the law, they were called out by their own institution and government and they also pushed for these soldiers to be dealt with - full force of the law, no easy pickings.

That is the hallmark of a strong institution, which is why everyone in the west supports them including the media. China was playing innocent here and got called out.

Difference is that in western government including Australia or any democracy for that matter. There will be checks and balances, you might be able to commit a crime but very rarely will that go unpunished. As the checks and balances are in place using different institutions vs other institutions there is no incentive to hide crimes. I cannot say the same with confidence towards China or other totalitarian regimes. In China what CCP says, goes.

They can make laws and break laws as they are the law.

You materially benefitted from imperialism and did not issue reparations. no one held you accountable - until now. Your apologies rings hollow. If the Nazis won WW2, carried out their goals, and then apologized a few hundred years later, their words are equally hollow.
