Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorists in a hideout in Pakistan
NEW DELHI: The arrest of three Jaish-e-Mohammed suspects and the detention of 10 others who were supposedly influenced by Jaish ideology prove that the outfit has managed to find a toehold in the country. They also confirm that Project Karachi - an ISI-backed scheme to train Indians for terrorist acts - continues to pose a grave danger to India.
Coupled with the Pathankot attack in January, the revival of the outfit as evidenced by the plot to strike at Hindon airbase is a big challenge for intelligence agencies. It is especially daunting since it is clear that Jaish is working closely with Pakistan's espionage unit to target India.
Project Karachi has the dual aim of indoctrinating Indian youths into waging jihad as well as training them, therefore, radicalising them, by associating them with Pakistan-based terror outfits. First revealed by Pakistani-American Lashkar-e-Toiba member David Coleman Headley, Project Karachi has intrigued Indian agencies, which have worked hard to add to their knowledge about it.
The incident also shows Jaish has gone online to recruit and radicalise Indians, as in the case of the prime suspects in the abortive operation, including Sajid. While Jaish had till date stuck to traditional ways to win over adherents, outfits such as Islamic State, Ansar-Ud-Tawhid and later al-Qaida had quickly yoked technology for their nefarious schemes.
The reasons for Jaish's desperate bid to target India are manifold. The outfit, say sources, is under pressure from ISI and the Pakistan army to prove itself. The heads of the group, Maulana Masood Azhar and Mufti Ashgar, have been given a second chance by the intelligence agency after it withdrew much of its support when Jaish aligned with al-Qaida and twice targeted Pervez Musharraf.
