Army’s questionable decisions
By Editorial
THE carefully constructed veneer of neutrality that the army leadership had constructed through much of the national political crisis instigated by Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri has been torn apart. First, came the army’s statement on Sunday, the third in a series of statements in recent days on the political crisis, which quite astonishingly elevated the legitimacy and credibility of the demands of Imran Khan, Tahirul Qadri and their violent protesters above that of the choices and actions of an elected government dealing with a political crisis. Consider the sequence of events so far. When the army first publicly waded into the political crisis, it counselled restraint on all sides — as though it was the government that fundamentally still had some questions hanging over its legitimacy simply because Imran Khan and Tahirul Qadri alleged so. Next, the army crept towards the Khan/Qadri camp by urging the government to facilitate negotiations — as though it was the government that was being unreasonable, and not Mr Khan and Mr Qadri.

Now, staggeringly, the army has ‘advised’ the government not to use force against violent protesters and essentially told it to make whatever concessions necessary to placate Mr Khan and Mr Qadri. It is simply extraordinary that it is the PAT and PTI supporters who want to break into and occupy state buildings, but it is the government that has been rebuked. It’s as if the army is unaware — rather, unwilling — to acknowledge the constitutional scheme of things: it is the government that is supposed to give orders to the army, not the other way around. The government has already issued its order: invoking Article 245. On Saturday, as violent thugs attacked parliament, it was surely the army’s duty to repel them. But the soldiers stationed there did nothing and the army leadership the next day warned the government instead of the protesters — which largely explains why the protesters were able to continue their pitched battles with the police and attacked the PTV headquarters yesterday.

If that were not enough, yesterday also brought another thunderbolt: this time from within the PTI with party president Javed Hashmi indicating that Mr Khan is essentially doing what he has been asked and encouraged to do by the army leadership. It took the ISPR a few hours to respond with the inevitable denial, but a mere denial is inadequate at this point. The functioning of the state stands paralysed because a few thousand protesters and their leaders have laid siege to state institutions. Where is the army condemnation of that? Would the army allow even a handful of peaceful protesters to gather outside GHQ for a few hours? The army is hardly being ‘neutral’. It is making a choice. And, it is disappointing that choice is doing little to strengthen the constitutional, democratic and legitimate scheme of things.

Army is probably the biggest hypocrite institution in Pakistan. These generals are millionaires and are on a US pay roll. They pretend to be the champions of democracy but at the same time, they are busy conspiring against the government for their own benefit. Javed Hashmi has fully exposed how the retiring generals of pak army were conspiring with the help of imran to topple the government so their duration can be extended.

Army is there to monitor any civil violation and prevent escalation if the Government can't handle people and does not resign it has the right to demand government to step down

We need re-election , with Scanners/finger printing units and proper mechanism in place for vote counting

People are done with politics of 2 Families over Pakistan for 30 years

This excerpt explains it all.
And the supporters of the mobocracy: Please spare us your BS about the protests being peaceful. They WERE until a few days ago but because the govt. was not provoked the thugs decided to storm the buildings--and the Army which was supposed to prevent the storming stood by.

I was watching it live. The police attacked first by throwing tear gas as the protesters started standing near the PM house gates. The protesters were told by their leaders to remain 'pur-aman' just before they moved there. The storming buildings bit you mention is rubbish and you know it.

Now the protesters are enraged from the initial surprise attack. They won't be taking it lying down even though they have been told to stay peaceful and outside the buildings.

Sure!! The leaders of the mob themselves have been telling the whole world for weeks that they may not be able to control the anger of the mobocracy. Then they decide to get closer and closer to the PM House and Parliament. The mobocracy leaders have been threatening to storm for weeks--it is all part of the public record now. No denying that. But they were not getting their 'martyrs'. Their numbers were dwindling. Their morale lowering. So what should be next course of action: Storm the buildings. So the leaders of two Thuggo-cracies come together literally on one platform, hug each other as 'cousins' and then march toward the buildings.

You can continue to believe the lies fed to you via the Kool Aid but we are not buying your version.

At any rate, when the mob got into the buildings or even near them then it was the duty of the soldiers to repel them. That was their supposed red-line.

Nawaz Sharif has employed 20,000 PML-N workers (thugs really ) in Punjab police and they have been brought over to use excessive force on protesters which include among others , live metal rounds , #6 shotgun cartridges ( used for hunting ducks, partridges etc but not on humans ) , tear gas shell of CN gas type , CN is more toxic than CS or CR

All will do well not to drag the Army into this,

if it is a democracy we want that the right to protest is part of democracy , the use of thugs for firing live metal and bird hunting cartridges straight into protesters is not

Army is playing a very positive role trying its best to 'Mediate' & ' facilitate', the violence turned political crisis', and as far as this bull crap of PTI President Javed Hashmi, third class lota about Army Establishment backup to PTI / PAT, it should backup whoever 180m think are on the correct path, just, and fair...and it should provide all support to stop bloodshed.

Next:
What is completely missing from the editorial is ONE, that It was the government that asked the military to facilitate and mediate a dialog (according to your paper), two, that all NS government had to do was to respond to allegations of rigging six months ago (according to your paper - there was no army involvement then), third, the government should have allowed the registration of FIR against the killing of the political workers (according to your paper), fourth, just yesterday that the NS government has handled this whole thing very poorly (your paper)...a government with that kind of a record is bound to make everyone else look bad - it may be democratic and constitutional in your head but those are not the choices governments make when political challenges arise...

In the end Imran Khan, Tahir ul Qadri and PMLN govt are at complete fault...with this completely failed democracy setup.

I STILL do not understand that these generals are not hanging NS and Zardari.

Army is the biggest traitor because they don't hang these arses.

The way I see it is - "Ku-ti" will turn into a "Babar sher" and will chop NS family co.

This is an editorial in DAWN? I never expected this newspaper would sink this low. Why dragging Army? The government has Police and Paramilitary at her disposal, she should use them. It was all started from two very simple and addressable demands:

1. Re-counting of votes in 4 constituencies.
2. Lodging FIR of model down victims.

Did Army ask the government not to open the 4 constituencies for re-counting or did Army ask the government not to lodge the FIR of the model town victims? If the answer is no,then why should Army clean up the mess that is created by the government?
