Army: Your new handgun will be a Sig Sauer

Half a decade into its search for a new handgun, the Army has chosen Sig Sauer's version of the Modular Handgun System, according to a Thursday announcement from the Army.

The new sidearm will replace the M9 Beretta, the Army's pistol of choice for more than 30 years.

"I am tremendously proud of the Modular Handgun System team," said Army acquisition executive Steffanie Easter in the release. "By maximizing full and open competition across our industry partners, we have optimized private sector advancements in handguns, ammunition and magazines and the end result will ensure a decidedly superior weapon system for our warfighters."

The Army first announced the competition for the MHS back in 2011, but multiple delays left the most recent solicitation deadline at February of 2016.

Sig Sauer beat out Smith & Wesson, Beretta and Glock for the contract worth up to $580 million, which includes firearms, accessories and ammunition.

The Army did not immediately provide any additional information Thursday evening, including specifics on the weapon or the caliber of the round.

"As MHS moves forward into operational testing, the due diligence taken by all of the stakeholders will ensure a program that remains on-budget and on-schedule," Easter said.

After operational testing, the new pistol should be fielded this year, according to the release.

While the Beretta M9 has been the Army's pistol since 1985, the military uses other handguns, including Sig Sauers, particularly in special operations. Green Berets regularly use Glock 9mm pistols, and last year Marine Special Operations allowed use of the 9mm Glock 19. Navy SEALs generally use the Sig Sauer P226 and, on occasion, Heckler & Koch's .45-caliber HK45C.

(CNN)After a long and much-criticized search, the US Army has chosen Sig Sauer to produce its next generation of handgun, eventually replacing the current standard issue sidearm, the Beretta M9 pistol.

"Following a thorough operational test, fielding of the modular handgun is expected to begin in 2017," the Army said in a statement announcing the decision Thursday.

The M9's three decades of service since 1985 has occasionally made it the subject of derision among members of the armed forces.

"The joke that we had in the military was that sometimes the most effective use of an M9 is to simply throw it at your adversary," Sen. Joni Ernst, a former officer in the Iowa Army National Guard, said last week during the confirmation hearings for Ret. Marine Gen. James Mattis to be secretary of defense.

The multi-year effort to replace the Beretta has been slammed by members of Congress.

"The Army's effort to buy a new handgun has already taken 10 years and produced nothing but a more than 350-page requirements document micromanaging extremely small unimportant details," Senate Armed Services committee chairman John McCain wrote in a 2015 report on the program's problems.

"A decade for a pistol?" Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina asked at the same Mattis confirmation hearing. "They're relatively simple devices ... This is a great testament to what's wrong with defense acquisition."

But Army Acquisition Executive Steffanie Easter promised that as the program moved "forward into operational testing, the due diligence taken by all of the stakeholders will ensure a program that remains on-budget and on-schedule."

Sig Sauer's P320 pistol is believed to be the model on which the new handgun will be based. The Army is seeking certain modifications that are not being made public.

Sig Sauer was founded in Germany but has a subsidiary located in Exeter, New Hampshire.

The US Army’s Next Gun: SIG’s P320 Compact MHS | SHOT 17

Today, the news broke that SIG USA has become the winner of the United States Army’s Modular Handgun System contract, making its P320 handgun the next standard issue sidearm for the United States armed forces. The new pistol, to be designated “M17”, is a smaller, lighter, more adaptable handgun than the US Army’s aging M9, made by Beretta.



At the 2017 SHOT Show, SIG’s representaives were very aware of their win of the $500 million dollar contract, but all remained tight-lipped as SIG’s officers retired to the back room of their booth to iron out a statement about the victory, to be released later. When asked, SIG reps replied with various forms of “no comment”. All that they would tell TFB was that the manual safety model of their P320 Compact model was the closest firearm on the showroom floor to the weapon submitted to MHS, which squares with an earlier article by Soldier Systems that covers their submission. We, of course, grabbed photos of the pistol as well as the growing reaction to the news at SIG’s booth.

BREAKING: US Army Selects Sig To Replace M9 Original Post Updated at 11pm With SIG Press Release and Photos of the Pistol

In a move that will define Army small arm procurement for decades, the Department of Defense has just announced that they have selected Sig Sauer to produce a “Modular Handgun System” for Army warfighters. The new handgun will replace the current M9 sidearm and is the culmination of over five years of testing and trials between several manufacturers.

Obviously, we are awaiting information from Sig to fill in all the blanks, but the big questions remain. Is the P320 the “Modular Handgun System” and what frame sizes are included with the guns? How many pistols will Sig end up supplying the Army?

And will we see lawsuits from the other “losing” manufacturers who submitted pistols for consideration?

By the way, at $300 a piece, $580M buys roughly 1.93M pistols over 10 years. That’s a lot of hardware.

Newington, NH (January 19, 2017) – SIG SAUER, Inc. announced today that the U.S. Army has selected the SIG SAUER Model P320 to replace the M9 service pistol currently in use since the mid-1980’s. Released in 2014, the P320 is a polymer striker-fired pistol that has proven itself in both the United States and worldwide markets. The P320 is the first modular pistol with interchangeable grip modules that can also be adjusted in frame size and caliber by the operator. All pistols will be produced at the SIG SAUER facilities in New Hampshire.
