Army places Rs. 700-crore orders for versatile device

The Army has placed orders worth Rs. 700 crore for a novel versatile device developed by the Instruments Research and Development Establishment (IRDE), Dehra Dun. The Integrated Multi-Function Sight (IMFS) can be used for surveillance and speedy engagement of targets, among other functions.

The IRDE is a laboratory that comes under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO).

Ravi Gupta, Director of Public Interface, DRDO, said the IMFS was an amalgam of a thermal imager, a laser range-finder, colour charge-coupled-device (CCD) camera, a global positioning system (GPS) and a digital magnetic compass.

The range-finder can compute the location co-ordinates of a target. The thermal imager is a night-vision device, while the CCD camera is capable of executing a digital imaging of the target. The GPS is another independent system in the IMFS.

“As its name suggests, it is an integration of various devices” and can perform multiple functions, said Mr. Gupta. With its diminutive size — just over a foot long and weighing 3.5 kg — the device could offer a big advantage in the battlefield, he said.The IRDE designs and develops, among others, state-of-the-art night vision devices and thermal imagers, compact laser-based instruments, integrated electro-optical surveillance and fire control systems.

But IMO,the should have provided separate cover lids for each lens,as won't 3 lenses at the sametime cause some confusion?

there will be a machanism already in place to turn specific device on/off. And its too heavy to mount on helmet.

Mate the IA is a throughly proffesion force- you better believe that any operator of this device will be intensively trained with this device and won't be making such silly mistakes!

I think Lightweight Laser Target Designator (LLTD) is a separate devide being developed by IRDE for the Army.

Semwal: The enemy taking advantage of darkness will no more be able to escape the alert eyes of the security forces. Thanks to the Instruments Research and Development Establishments (IRDE) which has developed a lightweight device which guides ammunitions right on the target.
In a major breakthrough, scientists of IRDE have come up with a ‘Lightweight Laser Target Designator’ (LLTD), which will not only reveal the distance of the target but will also hit its target with greater accuracy.
Senior scientist at the IRDE, Saurabh Verma said trail of the device has already been done successfully. The instrument developed to designate or illuminate target for missiles, until now was only available with the United States.
“Apart from the day time, the laser guided missile will now be able to mark the distance of its target in the night as well, thus hitting it with great accuracy,” he said.
Earlier, the defence force of the country was armed with missiles which could hit only in the daylight. The missile with the current technique could shoot the target in the range of 5 Km.
But the new laser target designator can hit the target at a range of 10 km with pinpoint accuracy.
According to Verma, barring US, none of the country has this technique at present.
“Majority of the formalities required for its approval has been completed and the device will soon be commissioned into the force,” he concluded.

# Latest successful trial of the ‘Lightweight Laser Target Designator’ was carried out in Suratgarh, Rajasthan.
# The LLTD weighs 20 Kg against the old technique which was of 30 Kg.

I think they should integrate laser target designating capabilities.

Once the new artillery guns are ready by 2014 as DRDO promised (a year plus or minus), we will have to ramp up production of guided smart artillery shells. Imagine how effective such a system as this would be to target illegal immigrants, bullying rogue army commanders on the other side of the border or even a future inevitable war.
