Leh: In a significant move aimed at countering the increasing threat and incidents of incursion by China's People's Liberation Army, the Centre is contemplating replacing the ITBP by the Army, particularly in the Ladakh sector.

Maximum number of incidents of incursion have been reported here. The Army's role in handling the recent crisis at Chumar has been appreciated as it took a tough stand on the issue of not letting the PLA troops to intimidate its soldiers.

The Army had even successfully managed to set up an observation hut at a strategic location in the Chumar region. Government sources said it was the Army's prompt and immediate action that put a complete check on PLA's plans for any further advancement into the Indian territory.

Thus, there is now a growing view in the government that the Army and not the ITBP should be made the "first line of defence'' along the India-China border.

The issue was discussed between National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and the officials of the Defence and Home Ministry.

. . . . .
Then whats the use of ITBP?

The ITBP is genetically suited for this role

The gene Dr Nielsen has been investigating is a version ofEPAS-1. This encodes part of a protein called hypoxia-inducible transcription factor 2-alpha. Transcription factors activate other genes, and this one (as its name suggests) does so in response to low oxygen levels. When that happens, it is responsible for stimulating the production of red blood cells, the growth of capillaries and the production of proteins involved in energy generation.

Everybody has some version of EPAS-1, and so everybody can acclimatise to high altitude. But such acclimatisation comes at a price: the extra red cells make blood stickier and more likely to clot, which increases the risk of thrombosis. Except, curiously, in Tibetans.

There were earlier concerns raised by Chinese in border talks of not having any Tibetians to face Chinese border.

Its either a compromise or Govt has some other plans.

Although ITBP is border security force and not military unit and hence the change.

We need to raise a regiment of Tibetans specifically for mountain warfare

And Tibetans have been begging for an opportunity to fight the Chinese.

Lukar Jam, who served as a teacher in Establishment 22, noted that Tibetans have never been given an opportunity to fight the Chinese, despite begging for the opportunity; they fought in the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 that created Bangladesh and in Operation Meghdoot during the 1999 Indo-Pakistan fighting in Kargil.

ITBP must be deployed at Arunachal, Himachal and Uttarakhand borders. We already have ITBP deployed in Afghanistan guarding our installations. ITBP is not sufficiently equipped to take care of the aggressive PLA. Border guards cannot confront an invading army, we need our army for this job.

Why not fold the ITBP into the BSF, give the BSF the entire LAC, and put them under army command with army back up.

Problem solved.

@Dillinger wasn't our plan was to keep a low profile till 2018 or so, till we complete our border infrastructure developments? How do you see this development? I think we are going to fast forward the works there.

The elephant is showing the dragon its muscle!

No, dragon is the one showing muscle for a long time, we are just showing the dragon that we are resilient and will remain so in future also, until the dragon stands down.
