No Army convoys till stocks reach Valley Lastupdate:- Wed, 18 Jan 2012 18:30:00 GMT GreaterKashmir.com

Srinagar, Jan 17: Army on Tuesday said that as a goodwill gesture it has decided to suspend the movement of its convoys from Srinagar to Jammu till the stocks of essential supplies reach the Valley. Army has also decided to provide LPG cylinders to civil administration from its buffer stock.
The General Officer Commanding (GOC) of Srinagar-based Chinar Corps, Lieutenant General S A Hasnain, told Greater Kashmir, “We are not allowing any of our convoys to move towards Jammu from Srinagar to ensure that there are no traffic jams on the highway. We believe the first priority has to be given to the vehicles carrying essentials on way to Srinagar.”
“Army will only allow priority vehicles to leave Srinagar. Today only 1200 soldiers left for Jammu from Srinagar by air. We are aware of the problems people are facing and we are trying our best to help them out in the hour of crisis,” he added.
He said Army has deployed recovery vehicles on the highway to shift stuck and broken down vehicles.
The GOC said the Army would be providing LPG cylinders from its buffer stock to local administration to overcome gas shortage in the Valley. “I have already given the sanction and stocks will be released soon,” he added.
The GOC said soldiers are providing all possible help to people across the Valley. “Our foot borne medical teams treated more than 8000 patients in remote areas and provided them all the possible assistance,” he added.
Lt General Hasnain while referring to different incidents said, “In the remote village of Walkul Lolab in frontier district of Kupwara, soldiers shifted expecting mother Yasmeen Begum wife of Parvez Ahmed to Block Hospital Sogam, located 8 kms from the village. Another expecting mother Parveena Begum of Zarahama village was shifted to Civil Hospital Trehgam by the soldiers, while another woman who had developed post pregnancy complications was shifted from Madar village to Bandipora hospital in the Army ambulance.”
The GOC said Army provided relief to 48 families of Melyal village at Tregham in Kupwara district. “The village was cut-off due to heavy snowfall. However, soldiers reached there and helped the families putting up there,” he said. “Soldiers of 46-RR shifted a 2-day old neonatal to hospital from Nambla in north Kashmir’s Uri sector. The timely intervention of the soldiers saved the infant’s life,” he said.
The GOC said Army at many places made arrangements to provide drinking water to people to overcome the acute shortage.
Meanwhile, Army’s Srinagar-based spokesman said all the units of Victor Force in south Kashmir were directed to reach out to people. “Army dispatched numerous patrols to almost all areas with major focus on the remote areas so as to provide all assistance especially medical help to the sick and elderly who were finding it difficult to move out of their houses due to freezing cold. Free medicines were provided to people by the Army doctors at their door steps,” he said. “Apart from this, soldiers also helped the civil administration in distributing emergency relief and ration in far flung areas. Mobile generators were provided for on the spot charging of phones in the villages.”
He said cooked food, blankets and drinking water were provided at various locations including patients admitted at civil hospitals especially at PHC Kangan.
“Soldiers assisted the civil administration to clear the snow from various places and helped police to clear the stranded vehicles,” he added.
Soldiers of Victor Force, according to the spokesman, carried out emergency evacuation of two expecting mothers from their villages located in remote areas to SDH Pampore and Kokernag respectively. “A large number of stranded truck drivers ahead of Wuzur on Srinagar-Jammu highway were evacuated and sent to Qazigund after providing first aid, medicines and warm clothing,” he added.
The spokesman said Army medical teams of Headquarters 31 Sub-Area reached out to the locals in far flung villages of Sombran, Pehlu, Kuther, Balhama, Zawoora, Khreuh and Khunmoh to provide medical aid.
