Army chief to visit Bangladesh next week

NEW DELHI: Army chief General Bipin Rawat is now headed for Dhaka, soon after Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina visited India earlier this month, in line with the policy to upgrade the bilateral defence relationship.
Sources on Wednesday said Gen Rawat will discuss the different steps being taken to build military-to-military ties during his visit to Bangladesh from April 27 to 30. The two countries had inked a defence cooperation pact during Hasina's visit here, with India also offering a new $500 million line of credit to Bangladesh for military purchases like off-shore patrol vessels.
Bangladesh had last year taken delivery of its first-ever submarines from China, with the two diesel-electric boats underlining how Dhaka has become a major arms importer from Beijing. India, of course, is trying to counter Chinese inroads into its neighbourhood, ranging from Sri Lanka, Maldives, Seychelles and Mauritius to Myanmar, Nepal and Bangladesh.
