Army calls off new year parties in memory of Delhi gangrape victim

Note to everyone. The law has been amended for rape. Minimum 7 years, maximum life imprisonment. No death penalty (and that was expected, since death can only be given for someone who took a life).

Everybody knows who these Khaps are and how they act. The Khap story has been running for long. It is time to put an end to these Khaps. They have no authority to decide who to punish. If these Khaps do have much guts and why don't they go to the protesters and say rapists should not be given death sentence. Let them and see what happens to them.

There must be a law which gives death sentence to rapists in open and shut cases. We are working hard to bring that law in and it will be, sooner.

DUDE republic day parade or Independence day parade is the only time for our brave defense personnel to accept respect for what they do ! if we don't make it there , it would be like insulting army's brave men for what happened !

Our army's brave are not so selfish that they would be hurt by people missing out on one republic day parade.They realise that this is for their country and against the govt. In fact the armed forces would stand in solidarity with the masses.We celebrate republic day every year. Missing it once won't make a big difference to anyone that too for such a cause.

Media in this case is impartial. Media did not take sides. So far as the consensus on rape crime and punishment is concerned, I think majority of politicians agree with each other cutting across party lines. Girls are raped in India every second. There is no point is missing any party. That girl was no special than 1000s others who are raped in India everyday. So i am going to niagra to party hopefully u guys enjoy ur night too. Party hard brosss

we all feel sorry and ashamed of the delhi incident but one thing which i failed to understand is..it is not the only incident which happened more than 20 cases happened after this issue across the country and a countless cases before that..but why are people so selective on this issue??is it because the media highlited it??dont we know that these things are happening from a long time??i still remember a news where a 3 yr old girl was raped in the last page of a regional daily..why is media so selective??and why are people such a sheep to follow it??why do ppl demand to boycott a republic day?? do they even know the importance of the republic day??it is the symbol of indian sovereignty its the proud moment of us when we adopted our constitution to rule ourselves.. which is above everybody..ppl get born and they die..but country is eternal..our pride is eternal..and we hold the responsibility to uphold its sovereignty..things do not change by boycotting republic day..or by forming new laws or by staging protests..they change only when people change..

Khap panchayats shock again, say don't want death penalty for the six Delhi gangrape accused

Opposing the demand for death penalty for rapists, Khaps in Haryana on Sunday said that no law should be introduced in a hurry, which can be misused. Speaking at a village here, Khap leader Sube Singh said that the authorities should not be carried away by emotions in the wake of the public protests over the Delhi gangrape issue and demand death penalty for rapists. “We have seen the anti-dowry Act and the SC/ST Act being misused. Any new law which gives such harsh punishment would also be vulnerable to misuse,” Singh said.

The influential khaps or caste panchayats have in the past drawn flak for opposing marriages in the same sect and their diktats on moral policing.

The statement by the Khap leader raised hackles of activists who said it was an attempt to shield the rapists in Haryana.

"20 gangrapes took place in Haryana in which several people are involved. This is a plot to save them. This atmosphere forces them to... disrespect among women," Jagmati Sangwan, general secretary of the All-India Democratic Women's Association, said.

The controversy comes in the midst of national outrage over the brutal gangrape of a 23-year-old in Delhi who died on Friday night.

The Army should make clear their standpoint. If they really for the safety and security of women, they must eliminate these Khaps. Zero tolerance for these Khaps. Kill them all.

Rape is the most heinous crime committed against women for which minimum punishment should be "Capital Punishment". Its a shame that despite massive protests and rallies with demand of hanging of cuprits, still panchayat don't inserted in hanging culprits

Still I hope that all these protests and hue & cry will result into some permanent and strict law for future.

first of all congrats..as u rightly said change is inevitable..and its happening in india as we speak.its a good sign that people are becoming sensitive to issues happening around them..this was not the case 2 years ago.people used be very selfish.now they are becoming active..andits a good sign in democracy..good to knw that u want a girl..and so do many ppl here..including me..ofcourse i'm not married but still.ppl are changing..2 generations ago women were confined to homes..but they are coming out now competing equally with men..u rightly pointed out abt cast religion issues..but the sex ratio is .940 now so there might not be sufficient partners to find..which forces people to accept other casts or religions or regions..also with the increasing education.the people are changing

we can clearly observe the difference in the successive generations..as the generations pass.people are getting broad minded..im hopeful that i can see a better india in next 2 generations..recent trends show that even army is increasing recruitment for women.

Similar happens with most major news events- look at the school shooting a few weeks back that same week saw many other gun related homicides but almost 0 media coverage. It must be incredibly disheartening if you are one of those victims who no seems to care about by your plight is just as bad as the one everyone is talking about.
