Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson signed a memorandum of understanding with officials and business leaders from Vietnam Monday.
"We've already had some discussions and I love the interest they've expressed in terms of commodity purchasing, but we'll also look for continued points of commerce between us," said Hutchinson.
he said Dong Nai Province, a rural region in Vietnam, plans to develop an on-going business relationship with the state.
Chris Neeley with Made in USA Works, a company that serves as an intermediary between the two, says one Dong Nai based company, Tinnghia, will soon announce details about plans to re-locate some furniture assembly work to Bentonville.
"Bring it over here flat to Arkansas, and we'll set up an assembly plant where you can assemble it with Arkansas workers." He said the state's central location and low prevalence of labor activism were attractions.
"I'm a former WalMart guy so I understand logistics. You can get it out across the entire country in two to three days," he said.
Tinnghia may also manufacture goods and buy commodities from Arkansas to ship to Vietnam, including cotton, corn and soybeans.
According to Hutchinson, the Arkansas Department of Economic Development will take the lead in establishing commerce between Arkansas and Dong Nai.
Neely said written statements of understandings and other agreements are traditional in establishing business relationships in Vietnam.
Hutchinson, who recently returned from a business trip to the Paris Air Show, said he hopes to visit Dong Nai at some point to further relations as well.
