Argentina sinks Chinese vessel, cites illegal fishing

Buenos Aires (CNN)Argentina's coast guard says it sank a Chinese fishing vessel that was fishing in a restricted area off the South American country's coast.

The Argentine Naval Prefecture chased and eventually sank the Lu Yan Yuan Yu 010 vessel after detecting it illegally fishing within the country's exclusive economic zone, officials said Tuesday.

First, according to a statement from the Argentine coast guard, warning shots were fired. The Chinese vessel, Argentine authorities said, responded by turning off its lights and deliberately trying to crash.

"On distinct occasions, the offending boat realized maneuvers aimed at colliding with the coast guard, putting not only its own crew at risk, but also the personnel of the coast guard," the statement said.

That's why the coast guard opened fire, Argentine officials said.

The vessel sank, and four people on board -- three crew members and the captain -- were rescued by Argentina's coast guard.

China said that the other 28 crew members who'd been on the Chinese vessel were saved by Chinese fishing vessels nearby.

Argentina's foreign ministry and the Chinese consulate have been notified, the coast guard said.


China calls for investigation


China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs called on Argentina to investigate the incident and ensure the safety of the crew.

The statement added that the Chinese embassy in Argentina had "urgently taken up the matter" with Argentine authorities.

China said the incident took place on Monday morning when the Chinese fishing vessel was fired upon by the Argentine coast guard after being chased for hours.

"As a result, water entered the vessel's body and the vessel began to sink," the statement said.

Video posted on YouTube by the coast guard shows the Chinese boat listing to one side during the operation.

Oceans near Argentina and Chile are rich with squids. But it is difficult for locals since they don't have large fishing boats. So usually they give permits to allow foreign boats from China to do fishing there. It is very lucrative business to many Chinese (including Taiwanese) Ocean Fishing companies and big money for fishermen.

I bet that this boat might not get permit to save the money. Fortunately only 4 got arrested and the other 28 people were saved by Chinese boats nearby. Just an international maritime case.

Chinese fishermen are really hard working. They can go to work anywhere in this planet.

This is none of my business. I just comments based on what I know. Generally Argentina government is very friendly to China. Since most of those ocean fishing boats are contracted, some captains can be really mean. You might not hear the terrible murder case happened in one ocean fishing boat, which cost 22 lives, just because the captain wanted to reduce the payment after they reached the destination.

There are many way to be called "illegal" fishing. Not just fishing without permit or barging in someone else's EEZ.

The method may also be illegal or not permitted under local law. And Some Chinese boat were known to acquire a permit with an alternate method to gain access to local port and then use another way to fish, which would voided their permit and considered illegal in almost every countries.

This is when the US Coast Guard caught the Chinese illegal fishing in the Bering Seas.

Holy shit. You do not understand American at all. Americans are the toughest in money and interests. If they think that those interests are theirs, even their parents cannot touch it. You have no idea how important the money is in American society. Everyone hold their money and interests very tight beyond the imagination of Chinese.

Same on international politics. Just like SCS. Americans think that they have interests in SCS. If China wants it, China need to pay for it. If they really get good payments, thy can throw Vietnam and Philippines into trashes right away.

In China, you can squeeze hundreds of yuan out of the pocket from your friends easily through dinners or other means. In United States, even if your friend is a millionaire, never think that you can squeeze 20 bucks out of his pocket for nothing no matter how friendly he is with you.

In United States, money or interests, is something separated from life.

But I still think that United States and China are the best countries because people are casual and equal. Not like Japan, inequality is encrypted in the language with so called manners. In Taiwan and Hong Kong, so called mannered people actually have colonial unequal levels in their minds.
