HANOI, May 12 (Bernama) - Secretary of international relations of Communist Party of Argentina said he believes a peaceful solution will be found to China's placement of an oil rig in Vietnam's exclusive economic zone and the escalation of tension in the East Sea.

Jorge Alberto Kreyness said it was vital to respect Vietnam's exclusive economic zone and freedom of navigation in the East Sea, Vietnam News Agency (VNA) reported.

He highlighted the necessity of abiding by international laws, particularly the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

Kreyness said most of the maritime and territorial conflicts in Latin America, including those between Argentina and Chile over islands in Beagle channel, were settled through peaceful measures.

"They are good examples for other countries to study,
" he said.

On May 2, state-run China National Offshore Oil Corporation (CNOOC) -- escorted by a fleet of military, police and fishing vessels -- positioned its oil rig to operate in Lot 143, an oil and gas field inside Vietnam's territorial waters.

Chinese ships also used water cannons against and rammed into Vietnamese coast guard vessels, damaging them and injuring crew members.
