Are the UAE-India ties doing down after warming relations?

Are the UAE-India ties going adrift after warming relations?

Some influential citizens of the Gulf country lashed out at the Modi government for giving a free run to far-right Hindu extremists, who have engaged in violence against Muslims, entertaining genocidal fantasies.

Islamophobic comments made by Indian nationals working for the UAE have created a perfect political storm, leading some top Emirati figures to issue a warning to the South Asian professionals in the Gulf’s rich Muslim country.

“The ruling family is friends with Indians, but as a royal your rudeness is not welcome,” wrote Princess Hend Al Qassimi, a member of the UAE royal family, on Twitter, referring to both the countries’ warm relations and Islamophobic attacks.

“All employees are paid to work, no one comes for free. You make your bread and butter from this land which you scorn and your ridicule will not go unnoticed,” the Princess warned.

The Princess’ tweet came as a response to Islamophobic social media posts by an Indian-origin employee in the UAE. The Princess also expressed her dismay over changing social reality in India, where the Hindu-majority has been pitted against Muslims, who are in a minority, intensifying the climate of hatred.

Millions of expats from India are working across the Gulf, from the UAE to Saudi Arabia and other countries.

In recent weeks, an increasing number of Indian professionals have been reportedly fired and forced to leave the UAE for posting Islamophobic messages on social media.

It’s an interesting turn of events between the two friendly countries.

In August, the UAE rewarded Prime Minister Narendra Modi with the state’s top award just weeks after India illegally annexed Kashmir, violating the Muslim-majority state’s autonomous nature.

But since then, a lot of things have changed.

India’s Muslim minority had been on the streets until the deadly outbreak hit the country alongside fellow Indians of other faiths, protesting the country’s controversial citizenship law, which eased the citizenship path to those other than Muslims living in countries of Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan.

India has had no hesitation in brutally cracking down on protesters, despite Islamophobic attacks across the country making life unbearable for the Muslim minority.

The anti-Muslim remarks on Twitter passed by Indian nationals living in the Gulf country is now forcing the citizens of the rich Gulf state to rethink about their relations with the South Asian state.

There are also some indications that a number of Arab celebrities in the UAE are likely to launch a campaign to challenge India’s anti-Muslim acts of aggression.

Prominent Kuwaiti Lawyer and Director of International Human Rights Mejbel Al Sharika has announced to voluntarily take the case of Indian Muslims to the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva. He has asked Indian Muslims to help him document the evidence of violence against them

Increasing Islamophobia in India refreshed some bad memories in the Arab world.

“95 percent of Arab women have never had an orgasm in the last few hundred years! Every mother has produced kids as an act of sex not love,” tweetedTejasvi Surya, one of the deputies of Modi’s rightwing BJP, several years ago.

Modi’s response

Feeling the political heat, Modi tried to calm things out, playing the diversity card to distract India's critics in the Gulf.

“Covid-19 does not see race, religion, colour, caste, creed, language or borders before striking. Our response and conduct thereafter should attach primacy to unity and brotherhood. We are in this together,” wrote Modi on Twitter on Sunday.
In what looked like a double whammy, the Modi government received another criticism from the 57-member Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) for increasing Islamophobic attacks in the country, where some Hindu nationalists have continued to blame Muslims for the spread of the coronavirus outbreak.

“[We] urge the Indian Govt to take urgent steps to stop the growing tide of Islamophobia in India and protect the rights of its persecuted Muslim minority as per its obligations under international Human Rights law,” urged OIC’s Independent Permanent Human Rights Commission in a statement.

Coronavirus: Indians in UAE warned against hate speech, discrimination
Ashwani Kumar /Abu Dhabi

Indian expats, reportedly, blamed Muslims for the spread of Covid-19 in online comments.

Following Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi's tweet against giving religious angle to the spread of Covid-19, Indian Ambassador to the UAE Pavan Kapoor has warned expats in the UAE against discriminatory behaviour and hate speech.

"India and the UAE share the value of non-discrimination on many grounds.

Discrimination is against our moral fabric and the rule of law. Indian nationals in the UAE should always remember this," Kapoor said in his tweet.

In the past few days, multiple comments were reportedly posted by Indian expats blaming Muslim community for the spread of Covid-19 pandemic. The ambassador also shared Modi's tweet, which said: "Covid-19 does not see race, religion, colour, caste, creed, language or borders before striking. Our response and conduct thereafter should attach primacy to unity and brotherhood. We are in this together."

Hate must stop: Sheikha Hend

Emirati businesswoman and philanthropist Sheikha Hend Al Qassimi reiterated her call to expats against Islamophobic messages.

"I knew India, the country of Gandhi, a country which suffered enough. The whole world is on its nerves with Covid-19, but the hate should stop. Namaste," Al Qassimi said as she shared tweets by Modi and Kapoor.

Sheikha Hend also warned the UAE law applies on nationals and non-nationals in terms of hate speech. Earlier she had shared hateful messages made by an Indian expat and warned that "anyone that is openly racist and discriminatory in the UAE will be fined and made to leave". In the past few weeks there have been many Islamophobic social media posts made by Indian expats in the UAE.

Religious intolerance a criminal offence in UAE

The UAE stands strong for tolerance and has made religious intolerance and hatred criminal offences punishable under the law. A federal law passed in 2015 criminalises any form of discrimination on the basis of race, ethnic origin, religion or caste. It also criminalises any act that incites religious hatred or insults religion, either verbally or in print or online. There were a number of instances when racist comments or hate speeches landed people, including Emiratis and expats, in trouble. Recently, an Emirati media person was arrested for racist comments on a video, which sought to create divisions based on ethnicity and nationality among the various communities living in the UAE. The video was particularly offensive to one community.

In another incident, an Indian expat working as chief accountant in Dubai was fired by his company for allegedly sharing Islamophobic posts on Facebook related to the coronavirus pandemic.

Last month, an Indian chef at a Dubai restaurant lost his job for making an online threat to rape a Delhi-based law student over her views on the controversial Citizen Amendment Act of India.

In 2018, JW Marriott Marquis Hotel ended contract with Michelin-starred chef Atul Kochhar after his Twitter post stated that 'followers of Islam had "terrorised" Hindus for 2,000 years.

where is FO in Pakistan? sleeping?

Not our business. Those are Indian expats in UAE. If they were to go unpunished for abusing Islam, Pakistan could raise concern. Otherwise, no. Foreign Office should highlight the racism in India, and ofcourse Kashmir issue, but why comment on this spat. Let it be.

People need to see the truth for themselves, not be shown the truth.

Don't try to jump into everything.

India need to return GCC 4 billion$ and then everything gets to normal. No tweets in the name of ummah chumma. everything becomes back halal business to Modi.

When Malaysia and Turkiye supported the Muslims of MaqboozaHindustan the ModiRegime threatened sanctions....

When the Persian FM raised his voice in horror of Delhi Progrom ... Persian Amb. was called to SouthBlock for 'Internal Matter' mantra...

We all await now how the ShoopaPawa of TheGreatPajeetEmpire 'reacts' to the GCC/UAE disapproval of treatment of Muslims in India...

What are the brave, valiant Indians going to do to UAE/GCC?

ShurgicalShitrikes?

'Internal Matter'?

The sudden vocal change in the tone of GCC is quite interesting.... it requires deeper analysis as to why this has happened.....? Exactly, now...why?

I think until the individuals' voices are not echoed by a significant majority, this will remain a low level issue.

And we know Indians, they change colors faster than a chameleon. So in a few days, Indians will be tweeting a lot of sane tweets.. and that will cool down the sentiments for now.

But if it continues, it will be all over for Indians in the gulf.

Interview the Kashmiris in UAE.

They can give the most accurate account of RSS atrocities against Muslims in India.

Arrange an exhibition. Don't Indian Muslims in UAE care for India? It's burning selectively

Exactly! It was Imran Khan who started this chain. Now people have started observing Indians. Gulf news/Khaleej Times do give reference of Imran Khan whatever he said especially his UN speech last year got unprecedented coverage. It definitely raised some eyebrows against Indians in Middle east. Later low IQ, stupid Indians themselves didn't stop exposing themselves. They have went too far now that they even don't care where they are living, earning money and still mocking the state religion of that country and in India, they are having a free ride under Modi govt thus exposing themselves at full.

This:
See, the fact is that UAE is now totally controlled by Indians at all levels, not soo much Oman or Saudi, but UAE yes. They just cant tell the Indians to get out, wether its Noora Al Ghurair(Of the house of Ghurair) or if its the ruler Nahyan himself.

If they do, then it will become an open declaration of hostilities with India in which case India's aircraft carriers would start patrolling closer to the Arabian peninsula(if required).

What is the solution?its very simple, give the Indian investors equal rights and let them settle Arabia as an extension of Indian civilisation, co-exist in peace, but if someone has fantasies of being a master race or something, sure that bubble will be quickly burst, India is not Pakistan, Indians are not Sudanese, the quicker Emiratis realise this, the better.

Dear Friend, maybe you are not aware Chakravartin Vikramaditya was the Imperial ruler of Arabia at one point in time, extending the boundaries of Bharatvarsha far beyond the Indus.Take it from me, Indians wont be leaving the UAE and cant be replaced by using any systemic laws of segregation.Arabia is too small for this. Especially now that the USA is pulling out, it has becomign increasingly weaker. It would be in Arabia's best interest to be on India's good books.

Lol, UAE armed forces? getting pasted by a bunch of rag tag Houthis. Lets not be funny. Anyways.

To get into the economics and probabilities.
TATA EV has come out or TATA has gone mainstream Electric vehicles, Mahindra and Ashok Leyland will follow, in the next 15 years most Indian vehicles will be Electric. i.e no dependency on Arabian fuel supply.Secondly, Arabia runs on Indian investors, especially Dubai. Asking them to pull out is not viable. Maybe you dont understand the social dynamics of that country. The only solution and future for UAE is to give equal rights and co-exist with Indians.

Don't Indian Muslims in UAE care for India? It's burning selectively
