Apple to cut iPhone production in first quarter of 2017: report

n">Apple Inc (AAPL.O) will trim production of iPhones by about 10 percent in the January-March quarter of 2017, the Nikkei financial daily reported on Thursday, citing calculations based on data from suppliers.

The company had slashed output by 30 percent in January-March this year due to accumulated inventory, the paper said.

Apple's shares were down 0.84 percent in midday trading, in line with the Nasdaq stock index.

Apple Cuts iPhone 7 Production by 10%

While no one has been expecting the new iPhones to break any sales records, not many people could have imagined a reported cut in production this early. According to a report by Nikkei Asian Review, that’s exactly what is happening in the upcoming quarter.



Apple has cut the production of its flagship 7 and 7 Plus phones by as much as 10-percent. The report blames low demand as the reason.

This makes it the second year running that Apple has cut back on the production of its phones. Last year too, for the January-March quarter Cupertino cut down the production of its 6S and 6S Plus by as much as 30-percent after lackluster demand led to an accumulation of the inventory.

Another worthy point from the same report concerns the larger model, the 7 Plus. The Plus sized model, which although still sees considerable demand, doesn’t see as many units being produced thanks to its complex two-lens camera system. A slowed production because of these sensors means Apple is unable to roll out as many units as demanded.

This news comes despite the earlier report that the phones had been the most popular in terms of sales this holiday season, with the iPad and iPhone making up a combined 44 percent of the market. However, this number too is lower than last year’s margins, which saw the company account for almost half of all sales in the period, at 49.1 percent. The drop in demand could be likely linked to a lackluster demand due to increased competition.
