What's new

Anyone here use a digital audio player?

A dedicated Highres Audio player is an expensive proposition starting from around $440 and the price only goes up.

That’s what I was mainly referring too.

Never thought I would ever spend the kind of money I would on one, but it’s worth it (to me) Specially because it’s an android based OS DAP w/ WiFi. So I can stream from TIDAL (for example)

Regarding wireless. I don’t have a lot of experience with that, Because I don’t use wireless.

Was basically told by friends (who do) that as good as those codecs are, they still aren’t as good as a wired headphone.

I using power amp on my android phone which can run flac files.i only listen mp3 if i couldn't get flac.
Redacted is good site for flac or download from Spotify and deezloader.

I stream high quality FLAC or even WAV files from my own built Linux server at home. For steaming, I use open source VLC player with Samba server in a Samsung tablet hooked up to my home audio system. While working on my PC , I use Linux based Amarok player which is connected to MySQL server. All my TV, PC, Phones and Tablets are hooked up to my home audio system either by cable, Bluetooth or Chromecast. The same apply to all my videos.
Do you run plex on your server?

Those that don’t know, basically a much more advanced version of an iPod touch (for example) For much higher audio resolution files.

I’m not sure how many Audiophiles (if any) exist on this forum and was just curious.

It all depends, you are talking about a hardware product, A DIY hardware solution or a software solution.

You already have a pretty good hardware.

But if you want to go for DIY solution you may want to explore VS1053 with a better MCU like PIC32 or one of the ARM bases MCUs, with ATMega based arduino solution it will be good as long as you are playing MP3 files. For flac you 'll need a faster mcu.

You can also explore STA013/020 like chips but only if you have lot of spare time for hobbies and propensity for programming and soldering.

There is another way and that is raspberry Pi based hardware/software solution, some of them are extremely good.

Then there is VLC based option already discussed by one member.

Once you have a playing solution you could refine your output with commercially available solutions or again go the DIY way with a sound refiner like mine OPA627+BUF634 or LME49720+BUF634 then split it with an active crossover network separating the highs and the lows and the mids and then send it to the speakers through a class A, class D, power Mosfet based power amp or gain-clone. For DIY LM3886 or TDA7293 are still the best.

I prefer a simple stereo setup with no cross over sound going to two normal speaker set through a self build class A AMPs or Class D having low THD, just a simple mixer of two channels, a low pass filter build around bessel character with LME49720 and then fed to Yamaha YST-SW-800 subwoofer pair or a DXS18-800 pair.;)

Not sure what a digital audio player is but as a hobbyist musician/producer I have a DAC (digital audio converter) for my PC. The Focusrite scarlett 2i4:

iPod touch is basically an iPhone without the phone, which means it's runing on iOS and a general-purpose CPU. same goes for the Android based players. Idk how good they are getting nowadays but back in my days of audiophilia these iOS/Android based players are widely considered inferior to those models run on DSPs such as early models of iPod/iPod Classic. I still kept one 5.5 gen iMod but the battery died a long time ago.
