Police said four others, holed up with the militants in that building at Dhaka's Ashkona, have surrendered.

Dead militant former Bangladesh Army major Jahidul Islam's wife and daughter were among those who surrendered.

A team from the counterterrorism unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) cordoned off a three-storey building at Ashkona in the capital's Dakhshin Khan early on Saturday.

Around 9am, Jahid's wife 'Jebennuhar' turned herself over to the police with three others.

She told police that three others, including two females were still inside.

DMP chief Asaduzzaman Mia told journalists on the spot that there were three militants still inside the building.

"They have huge amount of explosives and suicide vests," said Commissioner Mia.

Officials on the spot said those who were still inside were threatening to explode grenades.

"Those inside have been repeatedly asked to surrender. But they are threatening to detonate grenades tied to their bodies," said Uttara Fire Service's Senior Station Officer Shafikul Islam.

Fire-fighting units have been kept on a stand-by on the scene since 5:15am and several others are ready to be deployed, he added.

Senior counterterrorism officer Sanowar Hossain said one of those still inside was Neo JMB leader Tanvir Qaderi's son.

The identities of two others are yet to be confirmed, added the DMP additional deputy commissioner.

Tanvir was the man who was found dead during the Sep 10 raid at the Azimpur house. Forensic experts said he had committed suicide.

His wife Adedatul Fatema alias Khadija and one the couple's twin sons were arrested from the house in Azimpur near the BGB Headquarters.

Hailing from Gaibandha, Tanvir graduated in accounting from the Dhaka College and later completed his post-graduate studies from a private university.

He had worked in two private firms before joining Dutch-Bangla Bank Limited’s mobile-banking department.

In 2001, he married Fatema, a journalism graduate from the Dhaka University, who worked for the international development agency 'Save the Children.'

According to Tanvir's relatives, parents and friends noticed the couple sliding into religious extremism after they returned from Hajj, the annual Muslim pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia.

Fatema also started wearing hijab at the time.

But the relatives did not know anything about their link to militancy.

Police said Tanvir took the charge of Neo-Jama’atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (Neo-JMB) as its coordinator after the terror outfit’s leader Tamim Ahmed Chowdhury was killed in a raid in Narayanganj in August.

Hel left the bank job after returning from Saudi Arabia in 2014 and launched his own business – 'Al Sakina Home Delivery Service'.

Police say it was then he had been radicalised.

He had rented the apartment for the Gulshan cafe attackers under the alias Abdul Karim. He also used another alias, ‘Shamsed’, according to investigators.

Former military officer Jahid, whose wife surrendered during Saturday's raid, got involved with the Neo JMB two years ago after leaving the army.

He was gunned down on the night of Sep 2 during a raid at Dhaka's Mirpur.

Police said Jahid was the second-in-command of Neo-JMB leader Tamim.

Officials related to the investigation also said it was Jahid who had trained the men, who carried out the terror attacks in Gulshan and Sholakia.

Counterterrorism officer Sanowar Hossain said the two other females, who surrendered with Jahid's wife and child on Saturday, were the spouse and daughter of one of Neo JMB's current leaders 'Musa.'

DMP Commissioner Mia said a pistol and some ammunition were found on those who turned themselves over to law enforcers.

He said they have urged those who were still inside to surrender.

Police said the explosives were tied to her body which went off as she came out of the three-story building in Dhaka's Ashkona area.

This appears to the second such case of a woman trying to detonate explosives to avoid arrest by police.

In 2009, when RAB arrested most-wanted JMB explosives expert Boma Mizan from Dhaka's Mirpur, the militant's wife detonated a bomb in their house in an attempt to kill themselves.

But both survived.

Mizan was snacthed by his JMB comrades in a highway ambush in Mymensingh when he was being been taken to court from prison in 2014. According to Indian intelligence agencies, he perhaps fled to India.

On Saturday, a team from the counterterrorism unit of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) cordoned off the building at Ashkona in the capital's Dakhshin Khan early in the morning.

The unit's chief DIG Monirul Islam said that they started the raid when told there were at least six Neo-JMB activists hiding in the building.

Around 1pm, a woman along with a child came out of the building and she exploded her suicide vest, said officials. A teenage boy also exploded his suicide vest immediately thereafter and died.

"The woman, in a burka, came outside with a child and detonated the explosives tied to her body," senior counterterrorism officer Sanowar Hossain told the media at the scene.

Police had not allowed the media crew anywhere near the building, but the blast could be heard and smoke was seen billowing out.

Police have taken the child, who suffered splinter injuries, to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Intelligence officials said the woman was the wife of militant 'Suman' and the minor girl was the daughter of another militant 'Iqbal.'

bdnews24.com correspondents reported from the spot that the woman was seen lying on the parking space of the building. Later she was declared dead.

Additional Deputy Commissioner Hossain said police were not entering the premises as there is still another militant holed up on the building.

Earlier, four others had come out of the three-storey building and turned themselves over to the police.

They included slain Neo-JMB militant and former army officer Jahidul Islam's wife Jebunnahar. Police said a pistol and ammunitions were found with them.

Police taking away the four, who surrendered earlier.

A former Bangladesh Army major, Jahid, was gunned down on the night of Sep 2 during a raid at Dhaka's Mirpur. Police have been since looking for his wife.

After the four turned themselves over to police, officials said there were three more, including Tanvir's son inside the building, who later blew himself to avoid arrest.

DMP chief Asaduzzaman Mia told journalists earlier in the day that the militants inside the building had a lot of explosives, which perhaps explains the reluctance of the police to attempt to rush the siege and storm the building.

Officials on the spot said then those inside were threatening to explode grenades.

"They have been repeatedly asked to surrender. But they are threatening to detonate grenades tied to their bodies," said Uttara Fire Service's Senior Station Officer Shafikul Islam.

Have to appreciate the CTTC Team and SWAT for being efficient with these operations. They learnt quite quickly how to deal with these situations after the July attack.

And very good news. Flush these maggots out and clean the country off this mess. Terrorism will never survive in Bangladesh.

I refuse to criticize our forces after seeing how inept the west is...particularly Europe.

Germans considered the Berlin attacker a threat and were going to deport him...yet, there he was...causing havoc.

And where did he finally get shot dead? Milan, Italy. And all of this after, they initially arrested the wrong guy.

Compare their resources, expertise and professionalism with our own - they are decades ahead. Yet, we're doing a decent job...

Well, there's no room for complacency as far as counterterrorism is concerned... If we are really 'decades behind', it's a matter of grave concern for us...

Decades behind...but, catching up all the time. I'd say our capabilities compared to even 24 months ago are greatly improved.

Equipment and financial resources can be improved very quickly, but expertise isn't something we can snap our fingers and get done.

With each op however that too is improving.
