Anti-Naxal ops: CRPF prefers AK rifles to INSAS, bulk purchase on cards

The Central Reserve Police Force, which is deployed for anti- Naxal operations, has decided to shun its standard weapon of combat, the indigenous INSAS rifle, and henceforth arm its troops exclusively with the AK series of assault rifles.

The force has also sought to procure 20,000 new AK series rifles for its troops deployed in the Left Wing Extremism affected areas in various states and counter-insurgency theatres in the north-east after it found that the INSAS rifle was not proving to be as "operationally suitable" as the Russian made AK-47 and -56 series of combat rifles.

The country's largest paramilitary force, with its three lakh personnel, is now planning to reduce the numbers of INSAS rifles in its armoury after a technical and scientific comparison with the sophisticated AK rifles found that the latter was more effective.

Its no rocket science. AKs suits best in COIN operations as we have seen with RR.

.

Ofcourse Kalashnikovs are preferred..!!
Extremely reliable as always.....hardly jams due to dirt, water or mud and add to that the 7.62x39 M43 round......packs more punch than a 5.56.!!

Those rifles were from older Insas versions which were supplied to police units... in fact the reviewer go his hands on one at a police station!

OT: Which AK`s will the CRPF opt for?

Most definitely 47s and 56s or even AK-103s..!!
We'll know about it for sure.!! :-)

Definitely no AK 47s (those havent been manufactured for decades!) and the Type 56 is a Chinese clone version.

My bet would be the standard modified Bulgarian AK which is already in service with many CAPF and state police units.

There is no such thing as AK 56.There is only Type 56,Chinese clone of AKM.

On topic,it comes as no surprise to me at least. In jungle warfare, typical engagements take place at no longer than 50 meter almost all the time due to obvious reason. At that range, you don't need a rifle designed for long distance accuracy, you need a rifle with high rate of fire so that you can deliver lot of steel in a shorter time.INSAS doesn't fit in too well since the operational variants do not sport full auto mode.

Who can blame them? In CI conflicts the 7.62mm round is the round of choice, this is the very reason India's most experienced CI force the RR uses the AK rifle series exclusively in COIN ops in JK. Non-isssue really :coffee:

Interestingly though this INSAS vs AK debate just further highlights why the IA has sought a multi-cal rifle as part of their F-INSAS program- there wouldn't be any need to have 2 separate rifles. A shame the MCIWS isn't in production just yet....

Yes,but I'm slightly disappointed with the MCIWS rifle because of not selecting the 6.5mm Grendel/Lapua rounds as an option.ARDE and Army should've chosen the 6.5mm options over the 6.8mm Remington SPC due to the higher ballistic coefficient, flatter trajectory, lower weight and a much greater maximum effective range.Heck, the Grendel beats the Remington SPC in each and every parameter quite comfortably.

DRDO can make Canistered Missiles , BVR missiles , anti missile shields and all sorts of high tech stuff but it can't develop a rifle better than something invented by a Russian guy in 1945 or an artillery gun better than the Bofors. Just amazing. It seems they just don't give a shit about it , no other reason explains this incompetence.

Yes you are right bro! Procurement is of Bulgarian AK only. Earlier 20 k were aquired by CRPF only on behalf of MHA wih orders from BSF, CISF, Maharastra and Orissa state police. Its trial, procurement and after delivery testing all was done at CWS, Pune of CRPF. and Reason for it is that firstly its very cheap just Rs 6k unlike other options. Also Its sturdy like all other variants of AKs.

And its my personal opinion about weapon is any weapon meant for COIN should be based on most simple technology. The more sophisticated it is more problem it creates while handling n possibly thats the answer why DRDO or OFB is unable to create a good rifle.

Any one know the cost of manufactering a INSAS and how much one costs I have been looking every where for it
