STORY HIGHLIGHTS
-Marchers beat on drums and fired guns in Mir Ali
-A kidnapping sparked the grass-roots demo
-A tribal elder helped organize the march

Islamabad, Pakistan (CNN) -- Hundreds of local residents fed up with militants in northwestern Pakistan protested against the Taliban and al Qaeda on Saturday, demanding their ouster from the region, a protest leader told CNN.

Qasim Khan, a tribal elder and one of the organizers of the demonstration, told CNN that protesters beat on drums and fired their guns in the air as they marched along the streets of Mir Ali, a town in North Waziristan, a district in Pakistan's tribal region bordering Afghanistan and a notorious militant stronghold.

North Wazirstan is widely believed to be a haven for al Qaeda-linked groups who launch attacks across the border in Afghanistan against U.S. and international troops. The district has also been the target of most of the more than 80 suspected U.S. drone strikes this year targeting militants.

Khan said the protests were organized after militants kidnapped a local resident on Friday. He accused al Qaeda and foreign militants of the kidnapping.

"We will not allow the Taliban and Al-Qaeda to stay in our land and will get rid of them by force if necessary," Khan told CNN by phone from his home in Mir Ali.

Good sign that people are realizing that militancy is good for no one-- not as a local power base nor as a tool to project politics in other countries. This will bring peace in sub-continent.

indians need to stop playing all innocent , india is actively supproting millitancy in Pakistan , its nothing new as same was done by india in the past also.

People of Pakistan have truned against these militants as its now clear that these pigs are enemies of Pakistan and they are just lending the a$$es to the highest bidder , be it the CIA , be it india , be it the super corrupt and disfunctional afghan-government or any other source that will pay them , these bastards will lend their a$$ to that bidder and conduct attacks in Pakistan.

signs of positive development..now atleast people are standing up against these gali mohallah mullahs..there was a time when raising finger towards anyone bearded was a taboo itself.

I agree completely. It's time for the decent people to rise up and say "enough is enough!" Al Qaeda and their ilk have brought the world nothing but pain, suffering and slaughter. Hopefully, this is a first step to finally getting rid of them.

.
Whats teh big deal... People of Pakistan don't want TTP or any of its subsidiary. What kind of stupid comment is that people are realizing. Is protesting necessary to get certificate of WE ARE NOT SUPPORTING TALIBAN. Our sacrifices are enough proof of what we want.

.
exactly these were the people who had helped these talibans
Now they are tasting them
.
same was happed in swat
.
But its good that now these people are with open eyes
