Hema Defence Strengthened its Position
Defence Turkey:First of all, you became the new General Manager of Hema Defence in this year. Could you please inform us on Hema Defence?s new structure HEMA Defense was established in Ankara as front office of HEMA Endüstri A.?. which is one of our group companies runs most of the production and sales operations located in Çerkezköy. Now I am building the defense company structure both in organizational and operational manner in Çerkezköy. We completed our production facility of the defense group in Çerkezköy .This year we started to integrate and test our new Tank Carriers in our factory , in year 2012 we will carry our works to make serial production for both domestic and global market. Which means that HEMA will attend universal fairs. Besides we have been working on 4X4 and 6X6 armored vehicle prototypes. We are planning to complete four prototypes of 4X4 armored vehicles to test in USA. And majority of my team focused to power-pack project for Turkish Main Battle Tank since year 2008. We achieved amazing results with our partners to produce our own engine and transmission
Defence Turkey:In 2009 Hema Defence took a sound achievement in Tank Transporter and Semi-Trailer Project and became the prime contractor. Within this concept, Could you please enlighten us the current status in this project and your capabilities, technological competence in this vehicle?
First of all HEMA TTAR is the first Tank Carrier tested to climb 30% up-hill inclination with 70 tons of payload in the world which is also capable to transport 2 APC?s on it?s deck at the same time. HEMA TTAR (Tank Carrier) has so many unique characteristics such as;
1. Having more than 1100 km range without refueling (fully loaded)
2. Less than 27 meters turning diameter
3. Aggressive breaking capability 35 to 0 km/s breaking distance less than 8 meters
4. Easy and fast leveling of the deck and equal force distribution to all axles, thanks for our hydraulic suspension system on our trailer.
5. Ability to move in 20% side slope
6. Powerful recovery winches (2X35 Tons) driven by PTO.
7. Specifically designed power train, with a 1:13 torque ratio
We finished the prototype and pilot system qualification tests successfully and delivered first two systems to related unit of Turkish Land Forces
Next two batches will be finished in December 2011 and January 2012.

Could you please inform us about your activities on 4x4 vehicles?
Factory plant for armored vehicles production is completed. While we are purchasing related machinery and equipments to produce our 4X4 vehicle we are finalizing the critical design phase. In this project the System
Design lead by HEMA Defense group and system specifications defined by us. Third and fourth of the prototypes will be produced in our factory. Currently we are affording more to develop sub-systems. This vehicle is not only being prepared for the current needs nor just for the domestic market. This is my dream project which will be served to global defense market with advanced characteristics.
Defence Turkey:. It is well known that Hema Defence has an joint business with Patria on mine cleaning Vehicles? Could you please enlighten us regarding your activities in this point?
Patria is our key partner in somany projects. Mine Breeching Vehicle is one of our projects which we have been preparing with Patria. Patria has already finished these systems and those are being used by Finnish and Pollish armies. These sytems work on Leo-2A Tanks, and we already found the first 50 Leo-2A?s to be used and sold to Turkey.
Defence Turkey:. Could you please inform us your export strategies, target regions? By which vehicles and capabilities do you assess your position more competitive in these areas?
Tank Carriers (named as HEMA TTAR) will take the first place in our short term export strategy. We produced HEMA TTAR according to NATO standards. Each detail and subcomponent of the system is selected and tested accordingly. The design and integration processes of the system are accomplished by HEMA. So many sub-systems were distributed to small and middle size companies ( KOBI?s) as sub-contractors as a project target, while HEMA and SSM holds the complete I&P rights. This is the best tank carrier of the world in it?s class and I may say quite competitive in cost when compared with the others. As the result HEMA TTAR entered the defense market and the literature as the first Turkish National tank carrier with the most modern and advanced qualifications.
Even though HEMA exports 80 % of it?s products in means of sub-systems produced for commercial vehicles over 600 companies in 60 countries we have a very small business with defense sector. I find this as a great opportunity since we have an unique labor and machinery capacity combined with quality systems those fulfill the needs to produce for all kind of military vehicles and even for aerospace industry. I think these outline our incoming marketing strategy as HEMA Defense group.
Defence Turkey:. Could you please enlighten us the other activities performed and projects carried out by HEMA over the years? What is your assessment on your R&D activities?
HEMA has the capacity to produce both complete vehicles and sub-systems. We are producing complete steering, brake, hydraulic, engine, gear box and transmission systems for the global market since 1974. More than 80% of our products is being exported. Our R&D departments developed so many systems and sub-systems in every group of product. HEMA is the only company in Turkey now to design and built it?s own complete vehicle with sub-systems.
Defence Turkey:How do you assess your activities in Aerospace?
Increasing requirements in quality systems, thru both global market and our high end customers improved us to produce for aerospace industry. We got AS-9100 and other necessary certificates to produce sub-systems in this sector. Especially in air-craft actuator production HEMA Endüstri A.?. is the only domestic producer which can design and produce complete systems. We have a strong intention to participate in Turkish Multi Purpose Helicopter Project.
We already start to work with TAI and TEI in different projects, and aiming to increase this business according to our capacity.
Defence Turkey:Hema has gained experience manufacturing components in its facilities over the years. Within this concept, what are activities performed with International and Local companies in terms of components, spare parts?
Hema Endüstri A.? is among the leading companies in Turkey and Europe in original parts and sub-systems and vehicle manufacturing in the automotive industry that not only undertakes industrial system design but also manufacturing.
Aside from the design and manufacture of agricultural tractors Hema also design and manufacture high pressure hydraulics gear pump, mechanically and hydraulically operates hydraulic lifts, hydrostatic steering wheel systems, brake and command valves, distributors, crank mills, gear boxes, transmissions, engine balancing units, hydraulic steering wheel systems for automobiles and commercial vehicles, motor blocks, engine timing gears brake systems of which 75% is exported.
In addition to machining and assembly capabilities with the new casting plant we have gained the casting ability for all types of motor blocks ,transmissions, axle housing as well as other parts. Hema Endüstri conducts this large manufacturing in its 800.000 m2 facilities of which 200.000 m2 is an enclosed area with approximately 2800 workbenches and 2.000 personnel.
Defence Turkey:What is your other activities and strategies on Defence field? Would you like to add some message for our readers?
As HEMA Endüstri A.S. we are developing a very specific power-pack family for military vehicles runs within between 350Hp and 1700Hp power out-puts. We set a team with our giant global partner and a Turkish University. The engine family will be owned by HEMA Endüstri A.S. with all I&P and commercial rights. The most advanced member of this family will be offered for Turkish Main Battle Tank as a National power-pack which has almost finished as the prototype. Besides we developed some sub-systems to be integrated to this power-pack to boost extra power for multiple needs of the tank systems.
I think we outlined our defense activities as the on-going projects and future strategies pretty well. I would like to express our readers that we spent a long time for preparations, soon they will see brand new things from us.
