It seems that everyone in BD considers SH as a necessary evil, very strange. BTW, how would she be disposed off once you people reach your stated objective..

She is old. By the time she becomes unnecessary and a problem, the problem will take care of itself.

As for the rest of my fellow Bangladeshis, we know SH isn't LKY or any remotely close. The point wasn't that the rise of one-party currently is going to make us another Singapore style fast growth, but that it's far better to keep SH as one party that what we have always had.

It also has a much better chance of keeping the country stable and a little more forward thinking than just thinking on one term vision. Which they rarely do other than filling their pockets when they aren't sure if they will be elected again next term. SH took up a lot of projects that are underway in reality. Having the chance of Khaleda wouldn't be in any way better than autocratic SH in the middle of all this growth.

Well, I'm not a fan of democracy either but we need to consider certain things before following the East Asian model.

Our political culture, which is pretty much an inheritance from the Mughal and British rule, is primarily based on loyalty. While the political culture of the East Asian countries is still heavily influenced by Confucianism which puts deep emphasize on meritocracy.

The largest two political parties in our country are still controlled by the same two political families and we have failed to create any meaningful alternative. This is not just limited to the top brass, even at the union level, nominations are given to the candidates solely based on their family background rather than their popularity or merit.

A dictatorship or autocratic government in Bangladesh would most likely resemble those in the Middle East rather than East Asia. Needless to say, people like Saddam Hossain or Muammar Gaddafi were great leaders; they not only handled their domestic affairs efficiently but also strongly positioned their nations on the global stage. However, the only blunder they made was to surround themselves with bunch of sycophants who had to rely on their leaders for every decision making in their states. That's exactly what's happening in Bangladesh.

There is a reason why the DUCSU elections have been withheld for so long; interestingly, the last one happened during Ershad's rule and we know what happened to him.

In our modern history, the students have been at the forefront in almost every major political transformations in our country. It appears, the political elite feels strongly threatened by this force.

The Awami League has dismissed the classification of Bangladesh as an autocracy by a Germany-based think tank, saying the label is slapped at a time when the country is being praised worldwide for uninterrupted development.

“This is utterly false and unrealistic findings,” senior Awami League leader Tofail Ahmed told bdnews24.com on Saturday.

A member of the ruling party’s presidium, Tofail claimed the government was not violating the right to speak, and the media were free to publish any report. “It’s not that no one can speak. In fact, they (those behind the report) want to obstruct the country’s development,” he said.

In a clear reference to the US, Tofail said, “Those who termed Bangladesh ‘bottomless basket’ after independence are now spreading such news out of envy.”

Bertelsmann Stiftung put Bangladesh among five countries that are no longer meeting minimum standards of democracy in a recent report on a study from February 2015 to January 2017. BBC Bangla on Friday ran a report on the study.

At a press conference on Saturday, BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said the observation by the German organisation was a ‘global recognition’ of what his party is claiming.

He termed the report ‘shameful’ for the country.

The BNP, which sits out of parliament after a violent boycott of Jan 5, 2014, elections, has been saying democracy is absent in Bangladesh and blamed the ruling party for this.

Asked for comments on the allegation raised by the BNP, Abdur Razzaque, another member of the Awami League’s presidium, told bdnews24.com, “There have been questions over the 2014 elections, but the country is still treading the path of democracy.”

Razzaque referred to the support of the US, the UK and other Western countries for the Awami League government despite the questions over the election.

“A large party did not contest in the polls. The law-enforcing agencies had to face many odds at the time. Our rivals tried to carry out sabotages,” he said.

“But there is no option of being autocratic as the judiciary and media are free; there is freedom of speech, the rule of law; basic rights are fulfilled following the constitution,” he added.

He also thinks there is a ‘different agenda’ behind the BBC Bangla report.

“BBC published the report intentionally,” he said.

Awami League Joint General Secretary Jahangir Kabir Nanak agreed with Tofail and Razzaque.

“Some forces can never accept the stable condition when a country like Bangladesh makes progress, achieves development,” he told bdnews24.com.

“Those who are saying these (autocracy report) are saying these intentionally. They are spreading false information.”

He also claimed the people were enjoying all sorts of freedom in Bangladesh.

“Keeping the country stable, suppressing militancy – are these out of the purview of democracy?” he questioned.

বাংলাদেশ এখন স্বৈরশাসনের অধীন এবং সেখানে এখন গণতন্ত্রের ন্যূনতম মানদণ্ড পর্যন্ত মানা হচ্ছে না বলে মন্তব্য করেছে একটি জার্মান গবেষণা প্রতিষ্ঠান। বিশ্বের ১২৯ টি দেশে গণতন্ত্র, বাজার অর্থনীতি এবং সুশাসনের অবস্থা নিয়ে এক সমীক্ষার পর জার্মান প্রতিষ্ঠান 'বেরটেলসম্যান স্টিফটুং' তাদের রিপোর্টে এই মন্তব্য করে। রিপোর্টটি শুক্রবার প্রকাশ করা হয়েছে।রিপোর্টে ১২৯ টি দেশের মধ্যে ৫৮ টি দেশ এখন স্বৈরশাসনের অধীন এবং ৭১ টি দেশকে গণতান্ত্রিক বলে বর্ণনা করা হয়েছে। ২০১৬ সালে তাদের আগের রিপোর্টে বলা হয়েছিল, বিশ্বের ৭৪টি দেশে গণতান্ত্রিক এবং ৫৫টি দেশে স্বৈরতান্ত্রিক শাসন চলছে।একশো উনত্রিশটি দেশের গণতন্ত্রের অবস্থা নিয়ে যে সূচক এই সমীক্ষার ভিত্তিতে তৈরি করা হয়েছে, তাতে বাংলাদেশের অবস্থান ৮০ নম্বরে। একই অবস্থানে আছে রাশিয়া।উরুগুয়ে, এস্তোনিয়া এবং তাইওয়ান আছে এই সূচকের শীর্ষে। আর একেবারে তলায় রয়েছে সোমালিয়া, ইয়েমেন এবং সিরিয়া।দক্ষিণ এশিয়ার দেশগুলোর মধ্যে পাকিস্তানের অবস্থান অবশ্য বাংলাদেশের নীচে - ৯৮ নম্বরে। মিয়ানমারের অবস্থান ১০৪ নম্বরে। অন্যদিকে ভারত আছে বেশ উপরের দিকে - ২৪ নম্বরে। শ্রীলংকার অবস্থান ৪১ নম্বরে। 'বেরটেলসম্যান স্টিফটুং' ২০০৬ সাল থেকে নিয়মিতভাবে এ ধরণের রিপোর্ট প্রকাশ করে আসছে।তবে তাদের এই সমীক্ষায় উত্তর আমেরিকা, ইউরোপ, জাপান, অস্ট্রেলিয়া সহ পরিণত গণতন্ত্রের দেশগুলি অন্তর্ভুক্ত করা হয়নি বলে প্রতিষ্ঠানটি জানিয়েছে।রিপোর্টে বলা হয়েছে, "বিশ্বে গত ১২ বছরের মধ্যে গণতন্ত্র এবং সুশাসনের অবস্থা সর্বনিম্ন পর্যায়ে নেমে এসেছে। এক সময় বিশ্বের যেসব দেশকে মুক্ত বলে ভাবা হতো, সেসব দেশের সরকারও ক্রমশ কর্তৃত্বপরায়ন হয়ে উঠছে।"রিপোর্টে বলা হয়, "বিশ্বে যে স্বৈরতান্ত্রিক দেশের সংখ্যা সামান্য বেড়েছে, সেটার চাইতে বেশি উদ্বেগের বিষয় হচ্ছে গণতান্ত্রিক দেশুগুলিতেও এখন নাগরিক অধিকার ক্রমশ খর্ব করা হচ্ছে এবং আইনের শাসন ভুলুন্ঠিত হচ্ছে। ব্রাজিল, পোল্যান্ড এবং তুরস্কের মতো দেশ, যাদেরকে গণতন্ত্রায়নের আলোকবর্তিকা হিসেবে দেখা হচ্ছিল, তাদেরই সবচেয়ে বেশি অবনতি ঘটেছে।"এই রিপোর্টে বিশেষভাবে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে তুরস্কের কথা। এতে বলা হয়েছে, ২০১৬ সালে তাদের সর্বশেষ রিপোর্টের পর তুরস্কেই গণতন্ত্রের সবচেয়ে বেশি অধোগতি দেখা গেছে। প্রেসিডেন্ট রেচেপ তাইয়িপ এরদোয়ান সেখানে এক ব্যর্থ অভ্যুত্থানের পর মত প্রকাশ এবং গণমাধ্যমের স্বাধীনতা ও সভা-সমাবেশ করার অধিকার ব্যাপকভাবে খর্ব করেছেন বলে মন্তব্য করা হয়।

'বাংলাদেশ আর গণতান্ত্রিক নয়'

২০১৫ সালের ফেব্রুয়ারি থেকে ২০১৭ সালের জানুয়ারি পর্যন্ত সময়ে এই সমীক্ষা চালানো হয় যেসব দেশের ওপর, তার মধ্যে বিশেষভাবে উল্লেখ করা হয়েছে পাঁচটি দেশের কথা—বাংলাদেশ, লেবানন, মোজাম্বিক, নিকারাগুয়া এবং উগান্ডা। রিপোর্টে বলা হচ্ছে, এই পাঁচটি দেশ এখন আর গণতন্ত্রের ন্যূনতম মানদন্ড পর্যন্ত মানছে না। এসব দেশে বহু বছর ধরেই গণতন্ত্রকে ক্ষুন্ন করা হচ্ছিল। এসব দেশের ত্রুটিপূর্ণ নির্বাচনী ব্যবস্থার কারণেই এটা ঘটেছে বলে মন্তব্য করা হয় রিপোর্টে।

"এই পাঁচটি নতুন স্বৈরতান্ত্রিক দেশ এমন একটা পর্যায় অতিক্রম করেছে, যেদিকে যাচ্ছে আরও কিছু ত্রুটিপূর্ণ গণতন্ত্রের দেশ - হন্ডুরাস, হাঙ্গেরি, মলডোভা, নিজার, ফিলিপাইন এবং তুরস্ক।" তবে রিপোর্টে কিছু কিছু দেশে গণতান্ত্রিক অগ্রগতির প্রশংসা করা হয়েছে। এসব দেশের মধ্যে রয়েছে আর্জেন্টিনা, মরিশাস এবং উরুগুয়ে। ২০১৬ সালের রিপোর্টে বার্কিনা ফাসো এবং শ্রীলংকাকে মধ্যম মাত্রার স্বৈরতন্ত্র বলে বর্ণনা করা হয়েছিল। এই দুটি দেশকে এবারের রিপোর্টে ত্রুটিপূর্ণ গণতন্ত্র বলা হয়েছে।

Thus what the majority agree upon becomes laws that are binding on the nation, even if it is contrary to common sense, religious teaching or reason. In these systems legislation has been promulgated allowing abortion, same-sex marriage and usurious interest (riba); the rulings of sharee‘ah have been abolished; and fornication/adultery and the drinking of alcohol are permitted. In fact this system is at war with Islam and its followers.

Allah, may He be exalted, has told us in the His Book that legislative authority belongs to Him alone, and that He is the wisest of those who issue rulings and judge. He has forbidden the association of anyone with Him in His authority, and no one is better than Him in ruling.
