Gilead Sciences Inc.'s (NASDAQ: GILD) Remdesivir antiviral may soon be approved for COVID-19 treatment.

The Gilead Thesis

Remdesivir has been shown to be effective against COVID-19. Clinical data indicates Remdesivir is safer than alternative Favipiravir and also more effective. Van Buren said data gathered from 200 patients is “highly encouraging” and Remdesivir drug trials are positive.

FUJIFILM Holdings Corp (OTC: FUJIY) under the brand name Avigan, also has efficacy against RNA viruses. The drug is somewhat effective in treating COVID-19, but needs to be used early on, according to Japanese officials.

Van Buren said there are currently five Remdesivir trials underway, of which two are in China. China’s test results should be out by the end of the month. Gilead’s own two trial results will follow next. These are shorter 14-day trials but with restrictive entry criteria. A 30-day NIAID Hospitalized US Adult Phase II trial is also being carried out to measure Remdesivir’s efficacy against a placebo.

Remdesivir is likely to be approved for broad use in the coming months, Van Buren wrote in a note. Due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration may consider fast-tracking approval.

Alot of people can't wait that long. Even though it's promising. I hope there is a way to fast track it.

Flu fighter Avigan gets coronavirus call after 30 years in bullpen

Three days after Beijing endorsed the Japan-developed flu drug Avigan as a treatment for COVID-19, Indonesia is importing millions of doses to treat its patients, President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo said during a live-streamed press briefing from the Presidential Palace on Friday.

"No antivirus has been found. But some drugs have been tried in several countries and caused recovery -- namely Avigan," Jokowi said. "We have imported 5,000 doses, and are in the process of ordering 2 million more."

Avigan, the antiviral drug developed in Japan, has suddenly drawn global attention after Chinese medical authorities suggested it was effective in treating the new coronavirus.

But behind its rise is a three-decade struggle marked by twists and turns, according to interviews with people involved in its development. That history may be both a blessing and a curse for its producer, Toyama Chemical, as it joins the global race to find a cure for coronavirus.

The advantage of Avigan in the context of the current crisis is that "there is a national reserve as well as extensive research and tests conducted for influenza," said Yohei Doi, who leads clinical trials at Fujita Health University. "On the other hand, we don't yet know if it reduces the virus when given to humans." He said the results from research in China were encouraging, but that many details, such as the profile of patients that had received the drug, had still not been made public.

When it comes to China, people's racism comes on full display.

For arguments sake lets say its a Chinese virus as Trump calls it. How many did Chinese virus killed compared to wars imposed by USA on the world since WW2?

According to the doctors in China, this medicine, just like many other treatments so far, are somewhat useful at dealing with mild-ill patients, for sever to critical condition patients, not very useful.

So again, early isolation and massive public test is the key, but I am afraid judging by the US's situation it has already passed the point of no return.

Great to see American companies on the front line in the fight against Wuhan virus.
Of cos, after hiding the virus in fort derick for years and study extensively and then release into China. Its no coincidence US develop such drug so fast...

The speed of US develop such drug raise the red flag.

Indeed. How the hell are we to develop an antiviral for coronovirus without first letting coronovirus emerge from the wet markets of China.
China's place in history is assured
Lol exactly my point, all a sudden, the drug is ready. F22 and Hamartia doesn't find this odd? I wonder how much the pharma lobby paid trump

Initial trials show no benefit.
I doubt anything will work.
It didnt work for ebola either.

Vaccine which is a year away is the only answer

Hydroxychloroquine + Azithromycin has shown excellent results already.
No it hasnt..
Its a flawed study that people are quoting

Remeber apart from acylovir for HSV antiviral havent really worked..there a dozens of them which are even approved but they really dont work to create an impact

It has worked in China and South Korea. That’s why the death rate slowed down dramatically. It’s already being used in the US. It has proven to work for many people which is why it is already being used. People don’t care about some perfect study or perfect trial. This is a pandemic. People will not wait for some future cure and lose their life in the meantime. People will use anything to survive. Deaths rates in the Western countries will rise dramatically because of corrupt bureaucracies getting in the way. Asian countries prove once again its effectiveness in governance and common sense.
