However, the country's first internal combustion engine can be dated back much earlier, it was first built in 1908 in Guangzhou, southern China (http://www.ciceia.org.cn/nnews.asp?vid=288&f=3&lm=3310). Since then, various internal combustion engines using fuels such as gas, diesel and charcoal, etc. were produced for automobiles, boats, and industrial uses through 1908 to 1949. However, due to the lack of a solid industrial foundation and the outbreak of the second Sino-Japanese war, the industry as a whole was still at its infancy.

Since the founding of New China in 1949, the internal combustion engine industry entered a new era. (A good article with detailed information about the history of China's auto industry after 1949 can be found here: https://www.autohome.com.cn/culture/201910/934185.html?pvareaid=3311700)

With the first mass produced automobile FAW Jiefang CA10 truck rolling out of production line in 1956 (https://www.autohome.com.cn/culture/201507/876271.html), the auto engine industry also witness a rapid developing period. Some notable mass produced engines first came out in the late 1950s include NJ070 petrol engine by Nanjing Automobile , 680Q petrol engine by Shanghai automobile engine plant, 492Q engine by Beijing internal combustion engine factory, 6120Q diesel engine by Hangzhou engine factory, and 6135Q diesel engine by Shanghai diesel engine factory, etc. These engines powered various vehicles:

More engines were developed and put into mass production in the late 60s and early 70s. For example, EQ6100 gasoline engine produced by the Second Automobile Work, 6140Q diesel engine produced by Chongqing automobile engine factory, and SX6130Q diesel engine produced by Shaanxi automobile factory, etc. With the completion of the Second Automobile, China has produced a second large-scale gasoline engine production base. During the same period, several engines for heavy mining trucks were also produced such as the 12V135Q diesel engine and the 12V1 50Q diesel engine, etc.

During the era of planned economy (1949-1978), internal combustion engine industry saw significant development as a result of the fast growing of China's comprehensive industrial strength. Some notable achievements have also been made, for example, the country produced its first V8 engine in 1958 and mounted on a Hongqi CA72 Limousine: (https://www.autohome.com.cn/culture/201507/876628.html):

However, under the planned economy, the production were mainly for meeting the demands of the state, the efficiency was low. There was still a huge technology gap as compared to the international peers. Due to people's low income level and lack of consumption power, no enterprise achieved commercial success during this period.

After the policy of reform and opening up was implemented in 1978, the automobile internal combustion engine industry also ushered in a new era development. Besides the development of new models and improving the existing models, the introduction of new technologies and new models through joint ventures became a important feature of this period. The upgraded models are CA6102 gasoline engine from FAW , the new gen EQ6100 gasoline engine and the EQ6105 gasoline engine developed by the second auto works, the new 492Q series gasoline engine, NJ70L Gasoline engine from Najing automobile, Hangfa 's X6130Q diesel engine, Shangchai's B6135Q and D6114Q diesel engine, etc. Various newly developed gasoline and diesel engine models such as the LZ276Q, 490Q, 493Q, HH462QE , TJ376QB, 4100QB, 4102QB , and 6102Q series, etc. were introduced by multiple internal combustion engine enterprises such as Liuzhou Machinery Factory, Tianjin engine plant , Shanxi Huaihai Machinery Plant and other gasoline engine; Chengdu internal combustion engine plant, Xinchang diesel engine plant, Yunnan engine plant, Chaoyang diesel engine factory, Dalian diesel engine factory ( large diesel ) , Wuxi diesel engine factory ( Xichai ) and other enterprises.

Through technological innovation and international collaboration with internal combustion engine giants such as Cummins, etc, some internal combustion engine plants have evolved to become major players of internal combustion engine globally in the following decades, such as Weichai, Yuchai, Xichai, and Shangchai, etc. with huge success in commercial vehicle engine market.

However, for the passenger car engines, the scene was mostly dominated by foreign car companies during this period. JVs with VW in the 80s and 90s and later all international players entered and dominated the Chinese passenger car market, this situation continued until the late 90s, when new forces other than traditional car manufacturers (e.g., FAW and SAIC) of domestic Chinese car companies such as Chery, Geely, BYD, Brilliance Auto, Changan, and Great Wall, etc broke this domination in the late 1990s. The Japanese Mitsubishi 4G series engine played a key role in their early stage of development. A jointed venture was formed between China Aerospace Automotive Co. Ltd, and Mitsubishi, in 1997, to produce Mitsubishi 4G and 4A serie engines in Shenyang

(http://www.same.com.cn/a/gongsijianjie/gongsijianjie/), which were widely adopted by domestic car companies through the late 90s and 2000s. Till today, they are still used by some smaller car manufacturers or some old models in China.

Brilliance Zhonghua sedan (produced since year 2000) powered by a Mitsubishi 4G series engine:

Started from from this humble beginning, within one decade, all major Chinese car companies have developed their own engine technology and equipped most or all of their car models with self-developed engines. These enterprises include Chery, Geely, FAW, Changan, BYD, Great Wall Motors, SAIC, GAC, BAIC, Dongfeng Motor, JAC, Brilliance auto, and other smaller ones like Haima, etc. Here we will introduce just a tiny fraction of the car engines models developed by these Chinese car companies and give a glimpse to China's car engine development.

Chery

The most significant step made by Chinese car companies in passenger car engines is the development of Chery's ACTECO gasoline engine, which were first put into production in 1999, and then were developed into a whole series of passenger car engines for both naturally aspirated and turbocharged ones, from 3-cylinder to V-shaped 6-cylinder, from low displacement to high displacement (0.8-4.2 L), and from gasoline engines to diesel engines.

In 2018, Chery's 3rd generation ACTECO 1.6 TGDI engine were put into production and carried by multiple models such as Tiggo 8 and EXEED TX etc., with superb performance:

1000

With just 1.6 liter in displacement, this TGDI engine can produce 145kW(197Ps)power at 5500rpm, and 290Nm torque at 2000-4000rpm.

Geely

Geely's engine development started from early 2000s with MR479 serie engines with various displacements, which share a lot of resemblance to the Toyota 8A series.
w_1163455158411.jpg

In 2013, Geely rolled out the JLE and JLβ serie engines which outperformed the VW engine with similar configurations:

This engine was adopted by car models such as Geely Boyue and Geely Borui, etc.

Other Geely engine models include JLD-4G20, JLD-4G24, JLE-3G15TD, JLH-4G20TD etc. etc. with displacement ranging from sub 1.0L L3 to 3.5L V6.
e.g. JLE-3G15TD 3 cylinder 1.5 liter engine produces 130kW(238Ps)power and 255Nm torque; JLH-4G20TD 4 cylinder 2.0 liter engine produces 175kw power and 350Nm torque.

The question is, what is china's base for sensor development, vehicle electronics and now electronic cars arena? Are you guys ready for next jump?
Please shed some light in Chinese Market and Industrial complex.

Yes. Some sources say the newest Chery 1.6 TGDI which is carried by Tiggo 8 and EXEED models has a thermal efficiency of 41%:

EVs, PHEVs and self-driving cars etc. are big big scene here. We are one of the very few countries leading this revolution. I will give an introduction about them after I finish the internal combustion engine part.

For Chinese brand, major internal combustion engine manufacturers make engines and generating sets, such as Weichai, Yuchai, Shangchai, etc. And a lot more smaller manufacturers.
Shangchai:

For international brands, I think it is similar, e.g. Cummins, Volvo etc.

Not sure about the generators. There are multiple companies making generators, both domestic and foreign ones.
