interesting.
and you are probably the first alive Nihonjin i've ever met in english forums...you guys are as rare as panda...need protection...

Ah, do you speak or understand Hokkien by any chance?

. .
no..Mandarin only. family from northeast.
i could be counted as the new hakka? moving from north to south...

That's awesome, dude! What part of Northeast China are your family originally from? Heilongjiang-Guo ?

The reason why I asked because when I was in Guangzhou a while back, there's actually a healthy amount of Hakka with Cantonese people , even in HK, too. There's also another southern dialect called Teowchew that I know. In fact my xgf 's family spoke Cantonese but her mother side were Teowchew. Hehe!

Anyways, back to subject. I apologize for digressing, it's just that I get excited whenever anything Southern Chinese is discussed, I've a deep fascination for that part of the country. :)

wow, you are indeed one rare nihonjin~
em...father from liaoning, mom from jilin...and great grandparents from shandong...if you know the history of northeast...you'll get the idea.(by European standard i must be mixed race... )
Teowchew is famous for having lots of kids...LOTS! they are the living proof of how one child policy failed in south china...not necessarily a bad thing though...
hakka were originated from henan i think? so i'm actually close..

Hahaha, you know I think that stereotype about Teowchew is pretty accurate. My xgf had a lot of siblings, in fact they came to the U.S. by way of Philippines. They're Chinese but settled Philippines then came to US like during the early 90s. That's one thing I really admire about Cantonese / Teowchew because no matter where they go, they preserve their Chinese identity. Haha, talking about this makes me laugh ... And same time hungry!! Southern Chinese food is like soul food, btw. It's spicy, but not too spicy like 川菜 cooking !

That's awesome you know your family history dude, always wanted to learn more about Jilin. These are things I read about but want to see someday with my own eyes. Someday...someday!
