The fact remains that if India doesn't start ensuring that the Bangladeshi economy is uplifted then the Bangladeshi unemployment problem will become India's problem. Deporting illegal immigrants and building fences is a temporary solution. You simply can't contain such a large population once they become desperate or hungry. The writer makes many valid points. If Mr Modi wants to ensure a lasting solution to the problem of illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, he should rather apply the "Modi Magic" approach to Bangladesh's economy which has to be married to India's economy. Applying the Hindutva approach will simply create a longer and larger problem for India

Bangladesh's poverty and economy is not Modi's or India's problem. If they cant control their population it is their fault.

Just build a 10 feet high electrified fence and give shoot at sight orders. The BSF commanders should be told that they will be personally responsible if any Bangladeshi manages to cross from their sector and will face exemplary punishment.

1. Bangladesh is already India's problem. But we can't poke our nose into them. Some business measures and exchanges is fine, but overall, there is not much we can do. Some of them have a greater priority for changing their script rather than lifting people from absolute poverty.

2. The Modi economic magic is a solution but we need to understand that, though failing, Bangladesh is a sovereign country and we can't dictate policies to them. At least not overtly.

3. There is no Hindutva, secular or Islamic solution to illegal immigration. The existing protocols and state apparatus is sufficient to send most of the illegal immigrants back. Of course people like the minorities of Taslima will receive consideration, as that is consistent with immigration policies of any civilized state on the planet. Problem is the present laws are flouted. It is necessary to implement them with extreme prejudice if necessary.

The limitless corruption of BSF on the eastern frontier is also worrying. This is a little strange as their record in the West has been far better. An overhaul is perhaps needed there as well. Already villagers have formed Border patrols on their own. The State must fulfill its duties otherwise non state actors will fill up the vacuum.
