The opening batsman smashed 165 in the first innings and has gained five places in the latest rankings displacing team-mate Gautam Gambhir at the top.

The 31-year-old from New Delhi is now enjoying the highest rating of his illustrious career to date.

The news is good, too, for South Africa's Hashim Amla, whose two centuries in the match came so close to saving the match for the Proteas. He has gained no fewer than eight places in the latest rankings and now sits in second position, not far behind Sehwag.

India's other centurions in the match, Sachin Tendulkar and VVS Laxman, have also made significant gains in the batting rankings.

Off the back of some excellent recent form Tendulkar has moved up a further three places and now sits in equal sixth position while Laxman's 143 not out has earned him six places, up to 14th spot.

India's bowlers have also made an impression with off-spinner Harbhajan Singh gaining five place to number seven.

Zaheer Khan has maintained his place at number six in the latest chart.

In the rankings for all-rounders, Bangladesh's Shakib Al Hasan continues his rise, gaining a further two places to sit in third position on the log.

The 22-year-old scored 87 and 100 in his team's one-off Test against New Zealand at Hamilton and moves ahead of England's Graeme Swann and Australia's Mitchell Johnson in the process.

Hashim Amla does not wear a Castle logo on his cricket shirt, said that he did not pocket a cent from his match fee.
Promoting beer & liquor is against the teaching of Islam and as such Amla became the first player to be the exception.
who was granted permission by South African Breweries and Cricket South Africa not to wear theCastle logos on his clothing.
He scored 250 runs (not out) in the recent test match against India

yes thats true but he is not the first player ever to refuse wearing shirt............ there have been couple of other players who have played in County matches and refused to wear shirt having some kind of logos but not sure if they ever played in international cricket

Some info about amla

Hashim Mahomed Amla (born 31 March 1983 in Durban, Natal) is a South African cricketer. A right-handed upper order batsman and occasional medium-pace bowler, Amla bats at number 3 for South Africa in Test matches and has opened in limited overs contests

Upon being appointed captain of the Dolphins, Amla began the 2004-05 South African domestic season by scoring four centuries during his first eight innings. His success at the domestic level and consistent performances for the South Africa A squad led to him being chosen for the winter 2004 tour of India at the age of 21, thereby becoming the first South African of Indian descent to represent South Africa in international cricket.

Born to a South African Muslim family, Amla's grandparents are originally from Surat, Gujarat, having emigrated to South Africa numerous years earlier.[1] His elder brother, Ahmed, is also a professional cricketer, having made his debut two years earlier, and currently captains the Dolphins.[21] Upon his Test debut, he successfully requested that alcohol-promoting logos not be shown on his merchandise and playing gear.

Perhaps his sub-continental connection explains the nice flicks off his pads.

Amla is in excellent form. He plays so much like VVS Laxman. Just times the ball excellently. Great wrists as well.
Hope he keeps it up - but not against India again :)

AMLA should be example to our SO CALLED STROKE players who chase wide balls -

TEST CRICKET IS TEST CRICKET , 20/20 is a joke

I can make 10 runs from 2 balls if I slog my bat

.
Amla is a very good cricketer. He's being the back bone of SA at the moment.
