Every five hours a child dies from abuse or neglect in the US.

The latest government figures show an estimated 1,770 children were killed as a result of maltreatment in 2009.

A recent congressional report concludes the real number could be nearer 2,500.

In fact, America has the worst child abuse record in the industrialised world. Why? The BBC's Natalia Antelava investigates.

BBC News - America's child death shame

Sixty-six children under the age of 15 die from physical abuse or neglect every week in the industrialised world. Twenty-seven of those die in the US - the highest number of any other country.

Even when populations are taken into account, Unicef research from 2001 places the US equal bottom with Mexico on child deaths from maltreatment.

In Texas, one of the states with the worst child abuse records, the Dallas Children's Medical Center is dealing with a rising number of abused children and increasing levels of violence. Meanwhile, the Houston Center is expanding its services to deal with the rising problem of child sex abuse.

. . .
This sort of "Bash America" topic is common here and on other forums. USA bashing is a popular sport, and we see threads on things like rape and the like that is, in fact, a problem of every nation.

Do we really want to compare child mortality rates between nations? The USA is certainly not the best, but it is far, far from being the worst.

But if an American does that in reply, his post will be deleted as 'pointless'.

But if you are sooooo concerned about the issue, the more appropriate starting point should be the country with the lowest figure of infant mortality, childhood diseases, child abuse, education, and many more using UN metrics and statistics. Funny how only the US is dragged in without context and comparison. You think we do not travel and see how others live? You are not fooling anyone.

China bashing is even more popular all over the world. It's actually a fasion. In a forum, a Swedish praised Chinese language, he got banned for ever. :disagree:

Hopefully you can now share the pinch with the Chinese... and their feeling. :agree:

UNICEF - Goal: Reduce child mortality
More than 70 per cent of almost 11 million child deaths every year are attributable to six causes: diarrhoea, malaria, neonatal infection, pneumonia, preterm delivery, or lack of oxygen at birth.

These deaths occur mainly in the developing world. An Ethiopian child is 30 times more likely to die by his or her fifth birthday than a child in Western Europe. Among deaths in children, South-central Asia has the highest number of neonatal deaths, while sub-Saharan Africa has the highest rates. Two-thirds of deaths occur in just 10 countries.
Shall we begin? All those who are sooooo concerned about the issue should have no problems starting with Ethiopia and work their way upward the list.

by comparing with other you can not solve your problem but you can make yourself happy by self deception .......... by comparison you can not stop child abuse in USA .................
whats wrong in discussing a public health issue .. dont make it as VS thread

We didn't. The sole purpose of the OP wasn't some maudlin concern over USA children, it was simply to make the USA look bad... to bash.

Be honest. That's EXACTLY what it was. No American poster would do something as dumb as posting an article regarding child health or abuse issues of Pakistan, because it would instantly be recognized as a cheap and biased attack.

But of course it's OK to turn it about and do it to the USA. Because it makes people feel better, apparently.
